It's just an endless stream of fashion this week, isn't it? Next up for your perusal: Moncler Grenoble's fashion on ice, Patrick Ervell's militarist
Patrik Ervell's has been a name to watch since he launched his eponymous menswear line in Spring 2008. His shows draw a hip who's who kind of crowd, he's stocked at all the right places (Barneys, Opening Ceremony, Creatures of Comfort), and he was a CFDA nominee for best menswear designer this past year. Men swoon over his clothes and girls do, too apparently. He told The Cut earlier this year, "at our online store, 20 percent of our customers are women." So designing womenswear was the logical next step. His first capsule collection for women will land in stores and online this month. "I've always had a lot of girls buying my menswear so it felt like a very natural step to take," Ervell told us. "I think my girl might sometimes dabble in menswear pieces but the new collection also has a serious women's component too." So what was different about designing for women?
In the world of menswear, like in the rest of the fashion industry, certain niche designers always draw a distinguished crowd; Patrik Ervell is one of them. And for good reason. His look is always cohesive, sleek, and never safe. To wit: this year, to the surprise of everyone, he displayed several women’s looks that offered the same simple, striking aesthetic, which he’s captured with his dagger-sharp suits for men. Ervell notes that this collection was the culmination of his ten years in New York City, a place where “the powers of commerce and finance” mix with “the grit and toughness of the street.” To his credit, I wouldn’t fuck around with the person Ervell visualizes wearing these clothes. There’s nothing mean about them, but they’re hard-edged, crisp and cool.
Michelle Williams Does Monroe: Michelle Williams looks pretty gorgeous on the October cover of Vogue as Marilyn Monroe. But we still think we like this Monroe-impersonator better. {HuffPo} More Rihanna for Armani in their Fall 2011 Campaign: In this latest batch, her bra is falling off. Nice. {InStyle} Suri Cruise Likes a Classic Red Lip: She's been wearing high heels since she was three, so it seems perfectly reasonable that she's hitting the lipstick at age five. {Styleite}

On Thursday night, The Ace Hotel got to feel cool when GQ took it over for a party celebrating the nominees of their fourth annual Best New Menswear Designer, which they award in conjuction with the CFDA. The nominees included Kirk Miller (of Miller’s Oath), Patrick Ervell, Riviera Club’s Derek Buse, Joe Sadler and Greg Ullery, Alex Wang for T, Michael Bastian for Gant, and Rick Klotz, the mad genius behind Warriors of Radness. Alexander Wang was announced the winner this afternoon. He was chosen by a panel that includes Tommy Hilfiger, GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson, creative director Jim Moore, and others, and will receive $50,000 and a contract to collaborate with Dockers (last year it was Levi's, a match made in heaven for Billy Reid, who took home the prize).
