Plus: Shulman's views on fashion bloggers, overly thin models and covers that sell.
British Vogue EIC Alexandra Shulman gave a talk in London Wednesday night and the magazine published some of the most interesting takeaways on its own blog--something we can't imagine ever happening at American Vogue. And at Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani would have just blogged about it herself. Regardless, Shulman, who flies pretty under the radar for a Vogue editor, revealed some interesting tidbits--like how one of the best-selling recording artists on the planet can't sell fashion magazines, her burning desire to get Kate Middleton and how too-small sample sizes have prompted her to write letters to designers. Apparently, music stars don't sell magazines:
"I hate to use the words gay and straight, and I think we're all on some sort of sliding scale. Of course, I'm at the Richard Buckley end of the scale, but I hate that gay/straight thing." --We're overdue for a good Tom Ford quote about sex, aren't we?
Tracy Reese Weighs in on the Trayvon Martin Case: Like most of the country, the designer is outraged at the shooting of the innocent, unarmed teenage boy. She talked to Huffington Post's Black Voices about the matter, articulating her views on the troubling assumption in our society that People of Color are always up to no good:" The whole thing is just so sad, and the excuses are so lame... White people wear hoodies too," she said. "It's so sad that people want to be in fear of you just because you're a young man of color." Couldn't have said it better, Ms. Reese. {Huffington Post} Vogue UK Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Shulman Releases Her First Novel: It seems every writer, journalist, or editor has a secret dream of publishing a novel, and we're happy to see that Alexandra Shulman is one of the few who have made it a reality. Gap Tries To Fix What's Not Broken: Yesterday, Gap dropped its iconic logo that almost everyone and their mother could recognize for a Helvetica font logo with a weird blue square behind it. Brand Channel has some strong words on the change: “Ditching the classic logo, recognized by everyone, in favor of whatever that new monstrosity is, demonstrates a prototypical brand panic move...Ironically maybe, the new logo is perfect for the brand. It communicates exactly the values currently embodied by Gap: A sense of being lost and a lack of clear vision and creativity.” Ouch. {Brand Channel} Jil Sander for Uniqlo: Uniqlo's J+ collaboration hits stores today. Racked NY was on the scene and the hot ticket is the outerwear. {Racked NY} Christina Hendricks Thinks Karen Elson's a Copycat: Harper's Bazaar covergirl Christina Hendricks claims she's responsible for Elson's red locks as well as her success. "I was in Milan, and you would see the same girls at castings. There was one girl—she was like, 'I can't get any work. I'm so sick of this, I'm ready to quit. I love your hair color. What do you color your hair with?' and I was like, 'Oh, it's red. Here's my formula.' It was Karen Elson. A couple of weeks later, she had bright-red hair...Sorry, Karen, but you did ask about my hair color. Then I saw her on the cover of Italian Vogue, and the rest is history!" {Harper's Bazaar}
