I've seen a lot of strange mascara concepts during my time as a beauty editor--vibrating wands, brushes that you can twist to change size and shape, and motorized spinning wands. But Avon's new mascara is really throwing me for a loop.
Even the most enthusiastic of shoppers bemoans the trials of the gift giving holiday season—but fear not, we’ve compiled the best beauty stocking stuffers and tailored it down to very specific recipients. While Fergie's first fragrance, Outspoken, may have not made our list of best selling celebrity fragrances, its launch last year was Avon's most successful fragrance launch in the cosmetic company's 125 year history. This summer, the Black Eyed Pea will launch a sequel to the original floral scent. It's called Outspoken Intense, and this one, she says, smells even better. We journeyed up to Madison Square Garden earlier this week where Avon was hosting 5,000 spirited Avon representatives as part of their Avon Believe World Tour, to figure out what's so "intense" about the singer's latest perfume.
Reese Witherspoon--who is reportedly marrying beau Jim Toth this weekend in a Monique Lhuillier gown--has been busy lately shooting Water For Elephants and her May US Vogue cover. She can now add a new fragrance launch to her hectic schedule. Actually, it’s three fragrances.
Andrea Jung, Avon’s chairman and CEO, had to go on the defensive after the company reported a 15% decrease in profits for the fourth quarter. Blaming “execution” problems and governmental/economic issues in Brazil and Russia, she attempted to explain Avon’s plummeting profits to Wall Street analysts. According to WWD, analysts were pretty blunt in their questioning. Andrea had to address questions like, “[S]houldn’t there be a bunch of people who lose their jobs over such awful execution?” Her answers were a little cagey, but it sounds like some organizational changes may be on the way. “I’ve got to make sure we’ve got the right organizational structure, which may be different than it has been,” was one of her responses. Avon is going to upgrade aging technology in Brazil and spend less on advertising in Russia to offset tax rules there that were affecting salespeople in that country. But honestly, doesn’t Avon have bigger problems?
When I heard that I was going to interview Christy Turlington Burns, I immediately YouTubed George Michael’s “Freedom 1990” video for inspiration, which is of course the quintessential supermodel-meets-pop culture study. But that was 20 years ago. She has done so much since then, and her resume reads like that of a modern-day renaissance woman: model, yoga guru, clothing designer, mother, philanthropist, writer, director. Christy’s newest venture is acting as the face and spokeswoman for Avon’s new fragrance, Slip Into, which will be released in 2011. The name is meant to be evocative of the moment a woman slips on a pair of high heels, and the feeling of empowerment and sophistication that goes along with it (and presumably without the twisted ankles and calluses). The fragrance is an oriental floral, with notes of violet, orchid, and ambers, among other things. The bottle is inspired by the curve of a woman’s calf. This afternoon, a small group of writers got to speak to her via phone, and we talked fragrance, beauty rituals, career, and philanthropy.
Arguably the most well-known door-to-door beauty brand, Avon has teamed up with body-con label Hervé Leger to launch two new perfumes this fall: Hervé Léger Femme and Hervé Léger Homme. While Hervé, owned by the BCBG Max Azria Group, is a fairly upscale brand--at least in terms of price--the partnership makes sense.
