Your afternoon news brief, right here.
Today marks 15 years since Sex and the City debuted on HBO and Carrie Bradshaw first captured our attention with her witticisms, expensive heels and iconic long, curly blonde hair. The worldwide fascination her hair inspired is perhaps rivaled (in TV World) only by that of Felicity Porter. And Bradshaw's hair followed a similar trajectory. At the end of season four, she shocked the world by walking into Vogue with a bob. And now we know the story behind it.
Always wondered what it would be like to be in Carrie Bradshaw's shoes? Daydream no more! Sarah Jessica Parker has donated three pairs of heels that she wore on Sex and the City to a charity auction to raise funds for LaGuardia High School for Music, Art and the Performing Arts in NYC. {New York Daily News} There's no "Chasing Pavements" for Adele. Jennifer Lawrence survived every actress's worst nightmare last night when she fell in her Dior couture gown on the way to accept her Best Actress Oscar. (Those Dior gowns are tricky!) But JLaw was not the first woman to have an embarrassing fall in Dior; that honor goes to Carrie Bradshaw.
Tonight is the big premiere of The Carrie Diaries, the CW show that aims to tell the back story of New York's favorite fictional sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw as young girl who apparently grew up in the Connecticut 'burbs. With Gossip Girl star stylist Eric Daman on board to provide the beginnings of Carrie's theatrical, over-the-top style, we have high hopes for the 80s-inspired clothing that young Carrie as played by AnnaSophia Robb will wear. But as on-point as we're sure the new show's wardrobe will be, we're having a hard time envisioning us trying to cop a 1980s teenager's style--even if she is Carrie Bradshaw. So we thought we'd reminisce about the amazing outfits of OG CB, played to iconic perfection by Sarah Jessica Parker--and recreate them for all you modern-day Carries out there. Let's be honest: Sex and the City might have been a story about a woman and her soul mates (and the men along the way), but her closet definitely deserved top billing. From being mugged for her Manolos to passing out at the opera, here are our top ten Carrie Bradshaw style moments, and where to get 'em for yourself. Don't forget to check out The Carrie Diaries tonight on the CW (if you're not too busy watching The Bachelor, which is sadly airing in the same time slot. Damn you, basic cable!).
We caught up with Carrie Diaries costume designer Eric Daman on what we can expect from the new series's take on style icon Carrie Bradshaw--from 80s fashion to bra straps.
Let me start by saying that the fact that ASOS has dubbed these shoes 'Hurricane' is an absolute and total coincidence to the timing of my purchase! The truth is, I've had my eyes on these fuzzy sandals for quite a while now--but maybe all that extra time cooped up at home in Brooklyn was the extra little push I needed to grab my plastic and get 'ta clickin'. So what exactly was it that drew me in to these babes? Ok, so it's a bit cliched--but here goes: Carrie Bradshaw.
Carrie Bradshaw's iconic tutu, worn in the opening credits of EVERY episode, was fished out of a $5 bin by the magnificent stylist, Patricia Field.
FLORENCE--Last night Ferragamo celebrated the opening of a new exhibition devoted to all things Marilyn Monroe at the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence. Ferragamo's exhibit comes at the tail end of a resurgence of interest in all things Marilyn kicked off by My Week With Marilyn and buoyed by the release of never before seen photos. This latest manifestation of Marilyn will surely keep interest piqued. Ferragamo got his start in Hollywood as a shoe designer to the stars, Marilyn being one of them, so the photos, costumes, shoes, and artifacts on display (like a custom order for Monroe's shoes, or her appointment book) are impressive. But more on that later. Ferragamo got his start with the stars so it was fitting that the brand wrangled a few for last night's opening. The label has cleverly taken an interest in AnnaSophia Robb, aka young Carrie Bradshaw. Nineteen-year-old Robb is no stranger to the spotlight--she's been acting for years--but she's never been in the fashion spotlight before. And she's about to be in a big way, as The Carrie Diaries has been picked up by the CW with Gossip Girl's Eric Daman doing the costumes. We chatted with the starlet about how it feels to be filling those big Manolos.
