The co-founders of e-marketplace Of a Kind have radically different practices when it comes to shopping — but remain on the same page of what matters.
On the eve of its four-year anniversary, Of a Kind is unveiling a website redesign that better integrates content and commerce, and limited-edition merchandise with its full-time inventory. We caught up with co-founders Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo to discuss the new design and the state of the business.
I polled a handful of fashion and beauty editors to see which choice words are killing them right now.
Last Friday, for our first ever Fashionista conference, we got five of our favorite designers and one of our favorite e-commerce startup founders to sit down for an informative panel discussion on what is obviously our favorite topic: how to make it in fashion. Here's what we learned.
Psst...here's a little secret. I have very curly hair. Yet after 10 years of straightening treatments, blowouts, etc., no one seems to believe me. Of course, that's my own fault. I gave up on my curls. But you don't have to. It's never been easier to keep curly hair bouncy and frizz-free. I quizzed four fashion insiders—three with naturally curly hair, one with a (super cute) perm—on why they love their curly hair, and how they style it.
To survive in this business, you've got to have more than talent. You've got to be shrewd, savvy, determined—and a crazy-hard worker.
The holidays are all about nostalgia and one of the things we've been nostalgic about lately is hand turkeys! You know, that childhood arts and crafts thing where you trace your hand and make it look like a turkey? To be honest, we aren't all that crafty anymore, but our fashion friends, like Erica Domesek from P.S. I Made This for example, are like the craftiest people ever, so we asked them to help us out with this little project and they obliged. Erica helped us assemble hand turkey-making kits, which we then sent out to some of our favorite designers, editors and other fashion peeps who then created some of the most impressive hand turkeys we've ever seen (we are super thankful for all of you!!). Click through to see them and find out what these brilliant artists are thankful for this year, and have a very happy Thanksgiving (or just a nice Thursday).
We are super excited about Of a Kind, a new fashion site that launched today, which seamlessly blends retail and editorial content in a way that we've never seen before. What we think makes Of a Kind really amazing is that the product is comprised solely of limited-edition one-offs exclusive to the site (Very limited edition--like 30 units). And, they make a point of featuring emerging designers, allowing accompanying exclusive editorial content to introduce shoppers to new brands. They're also the first shopping site on Tumblr. For their initial sale, Mandy Coon created a special version of her adorable bunny bag. We'll let the site's founders Claire and Erica tell you more. Thankfully, despite launch day nerves and sleep deprivation, they answered all of our questions. Fashionista: What is the main idea behind Of a Kind and why is it unique?
