Fashion brands and their favorite bloggers have been playing with native advertising for years, often with unpredictable -- and frustrating -- results. Have we reached an impasse?
When it’s done right, it can change lives-- and benefit the brand.

SoulCycle is one of the trendiest workouts in the universe right now. Everyone from Lena Dunham to the Victoria's Secret Angels is devoted to the stationary cycling workouts, as are tons of behind-the-scenes fashion industry people. It's been called a cult, and like every good cult, it has a uniform. SoulCycle launched retail in its studios in 2006 and e-commerce in 2010. The brand currently releases 12 private label collections per year, plus specialty collections like summer pieces for its Hamptons studios. And no one can get enough of it. Julie Rice, one of SC’s co-founders, says apparel sales have grown by about 126% per year since 2008. So, what's the appeal?
It's Thanksgiving! The one day a year the fashion world puts aside its fad diets and smizes in favor of that extra slice of pumpkin pie and some awkward yet so-necessary family photos. To keep things light on this day of heavy feasting, we asked some of our favorite people in the industry what fashion things (what else?) they're thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Hurricane Sandy is upon us--but the fashion industry isn't letting this Frankenstorm bring them down. We checked in with some of our favorite people in the industry--from The Man Repeller's Leandra Medine to Kelly Cutrone to DKNY PR Girl Aliza Licht--to find out how they prepped for tonight's storm. For an industry that's supposed to shun carbs we are collectively loaded up on them--as well as candy, nail polish, and fashion mags to read by scented candle light. Click through to see how everyone is getting ready. And above all, everybody stay safe!!
Still can't figure out what you want to be for Halloween? Our favorite DIY fashion guru, Erica Domesek of PS I Made This, has a crazy--and surprisingly simple--option for you: Be a crow.

Jennifer Lawrence Strikes Gold: On the heels of that amazing Prabal Gurung gown she wore to the L.A. premiere of the Hunger Games, Jennifer picked another gold number for the London premiere. J. Law knows what works: her body looks bangin' in the Ralph Lauren stunner. Girl (crush) on Fire, indeed. {The Cut} Franca Sozzani Gets Pinned: On Wednesday, Franca Sozzani was inducted into the French Legion of Honor, the highest honor in the country and one received by the likes of Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld. The Vogue Italia editor stayed loyal to her Italian roots, wearing a Dolce and Gabbana dress straight from the Fall '12 runway. Sozzani attributes her success to following her own voice: "I listen [to others], but I must go my own way." {Fashionologie} Jennifer's Body (Double): Jennifer Lopez was spotted filming her new music video in Mexico with her body double, which is not surprising until you realize her body double is a dude. A dude who actually looks like a dead ringer for Lopez. Turns out Lopez isn't the only celebrity using male body doubles: Sarah Jessica Parker, who is afraid of heights, had one while filming Did You Hear About the Morgans? for a balcony scene. {Grazia UK}
The holidays are all about nostalgia and one of the things we've been nostalgic about lately is hand turkeys! You know, that childhood arts and crafts thing where you trace your hand and make it look like a turkey? To be honest, we aren't all that crafty anymore, but our fashion friends, like Erica Domesek from P.S. I Made This for example, are like the craftiest people ever, so we asked them to help us out with this little project and they obliged. Erica helped us assemble hand turkey-making kits, which we then sent out to some of our favorite designers, editors and other fashion peeps who then created some of the most impressive hand turkeys we've ever seen (we are super thankful for all of you!!). Click through to see them and find out what these brilliant artists are thankful for this year, and have a very happy Thanksgiving (or just a nice Thursday).
Being around Erica Domesek from PS I Made This is a heady experience. Even if you think you don't have a creative bone in your body, after 10 minute
Our friend Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This fame is making an appearance at the FIT Barnes & Noble tonight from 4 to 7pm to speak about her experiences in the industry and to do a little project. She'll discuss her early days in fashion, how the blog came to be and its unexpected but amazing success. There will be a signing of her book as well, and advice for similarly aspiring fashionites. Afterward she'll show how to DIY a summer staple, the fringed scarf. Make sure to bring an old t-shirt so that you can make your own!
Fascinated by fascinators? Kate Middleton's fondness for fascinators (they're de rigueur for royals and posh Brits at formal affairs) have created an increased fascination for the frou frou head pieces. Google searches for fascinator are up 50% since January and sales have spiked at the few US retailers that sell them, according to CNN. So in honor of the big day tomorrow, we asked DIY goddess Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This... to come up with a fascinator that you can make at home so we can all be like Kate. You know you wanna...
Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This wants your handbag to be as glam as your gown on a fancy night out. But that doesn't mean you've got to spend gaggles of cash on a clutch. In our latest video from the domestic fashion goddess, Domesek teaches you how to easily transform your sunglasses case or wallet into the perfect evening bag. What can we say? She's crafty....
They might not have made this year's list, but they most certainly can't be ignored. Keep your eye on these guys in 2011: Emily Weiss, creator of Into the Gloss and fashion assistant extraordinaire, makes beauty interesting...Deborah Lloyd is taking The Cut, reminds us that fashion's not everything...P.S. I Made This' Erica Domesek keeps us crafty...Tony King gives his old company, Createthe Group, a run for its money...Katie Ermilio is the next It designer...Alexander Wang is the next global lifestyle brand.
Fashion industry trade shows can often be an overwhelming and tedious experience for attendees who must navigate through a thousand plus booths of designers, hawking their latest creations. This year, WWDMagic, the Las Vegas-based show, has partnered with Teen Vogue to bring the event to a much, much bigger audience. They've invited 30 bloggers--including Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes and Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This along with a slew of up-and-comers--to participate in panels, trend reporting, video segments, and competitions as part of a Blogger Concourse Lounge during the three day show (February, 14 – 16, 2011). Teen Vogue will also use the lounge to promote the launch of their personal style blogger network Fashion Click. (Lucky, by the way, is also launching its own blog network.) Much like Tumblr's own coverage of NYFW, coverage of the bloggers' trip will be aggregated to one page: Wwdmagic.tumblr.com.
It's the end of 2010, and we're feeling generous! To celebrate Fashionista's stellar year, we've put together three swag bags of our favorite items a
Last night we were honored to join our DIY guru Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This to fete her new book at the Kate Spade New York store in SoHo. But since it's Erica, she of the golden glue gun, this wasn't your ordinary schmooze and have some drinks and eat some mini hotdogs type book party (though there were mini hotdogs and they were delicious). She put us to work. We, along with Design Sponge's Grace Bonney, Andrew Mukamal, Lonny Magazine's Michelle Adams, and Style Republic Magazine's Brittany Law, were tasked with DIY-ing one of Kate Spade New York's signature black leather London Totes. Sharpie and crafting site I Love To Create generously supplied us all with tons of great art supplies.
