Prolific and quotable designer Karl Lagerfeld makes for an intimidating interview subject: Permanently shielded from eye contact by a pair of shades, he's armed with a seemingly endless arsenal of knowledge -- and a very particular way of doing things that makes the idea of speaking to the man kind of, well... terrifying.
Fashion can be dangerous, people. Be careful out there.
Believe it or not, the Met Gala wasn't the only event this week that drew a stylish crowd. From Kate Bosworth's adorable Miu Miu, to a Chloe Sevigny white Christopher Kane moment, click through for this week's not-so-punk best dressed.
Alber Elbaz sat down with Harper's Bazaar's EIC Glenda Bailey yesterday at Hearst Tower for a "Master Class" session, where he discussed everything from his view on other designers to his own career path--and we got to sit in. Elbaz weighed in on John Galliano's possible return, as well as the controversy surrounding Céline allegedly ripping off his former mentor Geoffrey Beene.
Last night, Hearst held an intimate Q&A session with its newest staff member: Carine Roitfeld, they glossy's new Global Fashion Director. Harper’s Bazaar US editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey intro’ed Roitfeld, while Town and Country’s Jay Fielden asked the questions. In a tight-fitting grey dress, sky-high Alaïa boots, and a Miu Miu mink stole, Roitfeld indulged Fielden’s questions--deftly addressing everything from Vogue rivalries, aging gracefully, “the Internet” (Roitfeld’s newest obsession), and that now iconic Gucci campaign she styled with the label’s logo shaved into a model’s pubic hair. Yes, Carine Roitfeld purred the word “pussy” several times last night.
Moncler and Miami are two words that wouldn't necessarily seem to go together. But amidst the festivities of Art Basel, this clothier associated most strongly with mountaineering wear celebrated its 60th anniversary in the most glamorous--and unexpected--of settings.
Court docs show that Diana Wang's class action lawsuit against Harper's Bazaar may not actually be so strong after all. Oops! {BuzzFeed} Are you (C) Wondering what happened at the grand opening of C. Wonder's new Time Warner locale? Kelly Rutherford pogo-sticked, Karina Smirnoff sat on a giant teddy bear, and a fab time was had by all! {Fashionista Inbox} Is this the end of adventures in copyright? Feminine, flowy and ethereal. Some frocks seemed to literally float down the runway.
Barneys New York held their annual Beauty Breakfast last week in partnership with Harper’s Bazaar to celebrate some of the cosmetic industry’s rising talents. Bazaar's EIC Glenda Bailey, Simon Doonan and a slew of beauty industry stars set their alarms early to head to the Barneys flagship to hash out beauty routines, skin care regimens and give advice to the beauty editors eagerly gathered. Despite the presence of the effervescent and always entertaining Simon Doonan, the beauty gurus who sat on the panel discussion with Bazaar’s beauty director, Alexandra Parnass, were the real stars.
Fashion and art collided head-on last night at the Eli Klein Fine Art gallery in Soho during the opening of Chinese artist Liu Bolin’s exhibition, “Lost in Art”, which included a high fashion collaboration (not of the H&M variety). For those of you who don’t subscribe to Harper’s Bazaar (disclosure: I do), the magazine collaborated with the contemporary artist to literally paint larger-than-life fashion designers Alber Elbaz, Angela Missoni, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier — who was on hand, working the crowd — into the background. Liu is quite renowned in highbrow (and deep-pocketed — the large size of the pieces sell for $36,000 a pop) arty circles for his quiet but striking conceptual photos featuring himself painted into culturally and historically important locales in China. Harper’s Bazaar special projects director Laura Brown happened to have stumbled upon his work at a Stockholm gallery recently, whipped up this collaboration and skillfully made it work.
Could your astrological sign make you suited to a career in fashion?
Halloween might be long gone, but Tuesday night's fete for the launch of Pucci's new boutique at Saks Fifth Avenue showed proved fashion folks are not tired of dress up. Emilio Pucci creative director Peter Dundas co-hosted the event with Harper's Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey. Alexa Chung manned the DJ booth guests mingled with models (Coco Rocha, Anja Rubik and Jacquelyn Jablonski amongst them) all decked out in Dundas' gypsy-inspired Spring 2012 collection for Pucci. Which is fitting because just the night before a good chunk of the party-goers, Dundas included, had dressed up gypsy for Anja's themed Halloween party. "Anja's party last night was gypsy themed, so I went as a gypsy," Dundas told us of his Halloween costume. "I didn't bring anything and I was so busy I really didn't want to think about it so in the end I went to St. Marks and let me tell you, you can find everything at St. Marks within half an hour! And that's exactly what I did." Note to self: Hit up St. Marks for Peter Dundas-approved gypsy fashion--apparently gypsy is very in this season.
Kristen Stewart Is Smokin' On GQ UK: In a black high-waisted bikini and matching noir toenail polish, Stewart looks sexy and sophisticated--a welcome change from her usual sulky-teenager look. {The Frisky} Glenda Bailey Honored By France: The French government is honoring the Harper's Bazaar editor with the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an award given to artists who significantly aid the arts in France. {WWD} The Row's $39,000 Backpack Sold Out: It was apparently the first item to go from their new handbag line. Yeah, this doesn't make sense to us either. {WWD} Is Daphne Guinness Launching A Film Company? Rumor has it, yes. It's not totally out there--she's directed before, and starred in short fashion films. {Page SIx}
Glossies had a rough go of it during the first half of this year. Sales for all major fashion titles were down, with the exception of Vogue (up more than 12%) and Allure (flat, which is sort of a victory.) Vogue’s secret? Putting Lady Gaga on its March cover. That cover alone sold 100,000 copies more than Vogue’s 2010 March cover, WWD is reporting. Reality stars are also newsstand gold. Glamour’s Kim Kardashian cover and People Style Watch’s Lauren Conrad cover were huge sellers, though both those titles’ sales are down overall. And our favorite blonde girl-next-door-types? Glenda Bailey, Harper Bazaar’s EIC told WWD, “It would be a lot easier if we could feature proven sellers like Jennifer Aniston or Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover every month.” No one mentioned Sarah Jessica Parker, surprisingly, who is still getting quite a bit of play on covers. And the cover stinkers?
In a recent interview, Glenda Bailey, the EIC of Harper’s Bazaar, was explaining the differences between European and American magazines. She said, “You know, the American sensibility is different. In Europe, sex sells. In America, it’s hair.” This may be true. Blake Lively made headlines for a week when she went red. And whenever a starlet chops a pixie, there’s mass hysteria. Hair is a symbol of sexuality, femininity, and often the first thing you notice about a person. It’s a big deal. We decided to do a round up of the most interesting hair blogs out there. And trust us, there are many, many hair blogs. Maybe even more hair blogs than sex sites. Maybe. Click through to see our favorite hair sites, from the professional to the fun to the niche.
