It's been a while since we checked in on Vogue's Health Initiative, which officially celebrated its one year anniversary in June. Introduced last May, the initiative outlined six tenets which would work to promote health and well-being in the pages of Vogue's 19 (now 20) international editions. So how much progress has the Health Initiative one year later? We investigated.
For Numéro France's March issue, Sebastian Kim photographed white model Ondria Hardin with darkened skin in an editorial called "African Queen." Unsurprisingly, it pissed off a lot of people. Numéro has since released a statement on its Facebook page apologizing and explaining its decision to create and publish this story. Well, I'm not convinced.
Model Ondria Hardin can't seem to stay away from controversy: Her "African Queen" spread for Numéro has many accusing the mag of using blackface. {HuffPo} Can baring your lady parts make you more confident? The Large Labia Project thinks it will (yea, that's a thing). {The Cut} Shailene Woodley dyed her locks red for The Amazing Spiderman 2--guess who she's playing? {US Weekly} Kim Kardashian covers April's Cosmopolitan and tells the glossy about her growing empire. {Cosmo}
At the time of the shoot, Karl Lagerfeld told WWD that "[Ondria] doesn’t look 15. She looks 18 or 19." Well, he certainly styled her that way. Clad in a see-through dress and rocking a suggestive pout, the young teen definitely looks older than her years.
We've spilled a lot of (virtual) ink documenting all the modeling dramas this year. In the past 12 months there have been weight debates ranging fro
Karl Lagerfeld is shooting Chanel's spring 2013 campaign here in the big apple--and he's cast familiar face Stella Tennant (who fronted Chanel's fall 2012 campaign) as well as fresh face Ondria Hardin, WWD is reporting. But while Hardin may be new to the fashion industry, her name already has considerable buzz around it--and not necessarily the good kind.
Vogue's Health Initiative has proven to be more difficult to abide by than its editors may have thought. About one week ago, we called Vogue China out on possibly using an underage model in its August issue--two months after the Health Initiative and its ban on models under 16 was announced. The model Ondria Hardin's agent would not tell us her birthdate. But, today, Vogue UK confirms she was indeed 15 at the time.
Did Vogue China violate its own health initiative by putting Ondria Hardin, who reportedly just turned 16, in the magazine?
FDA Says Most Lipsticks Contain Lead: Just when you thought it was safe to add some pigment to your pout! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted a study for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, and found that of 400 lipsticks they tested, the majority contained low levels of lead. L'Oreal's "Color Sensational" Pink Petal lipstick had the most lead, containing 7.19 parts per million. Compare that with children's products sold in the U.S., which are not allowed to have more that 100 parts per million. But don't get too worried-- the FDA says the levels are so miniscule, there's really nothing to worry about. (HuffPost) Orlando Bloom Says Wife Miranda Kerr Makes Being Beautiful "Look Easy": He might not be spending Valentine's day with his supermodel spouse, but Orlando Bloom had no shortage of nice words for his wife Miranda Kerr. The actor told the folks at Australia's Kyle and Jackie O radio show that he is in awe of how quickly Kerr shed those post-baby pounds: "To have just had a baby and then got back up on to do that. I don't think it's easy for those girls. They make it look easy, but you know, it's a lot of work to look good." (Vogue UK) Huffpost Style Compares NYFW to Your High School Cafeteria:...and they might have a point. From seating politics, to an arbitrarily determined social hierarchy, Fashion Week is kind of like a chic flashback to our high school days. (HuffPost)
more Check out the incredibly sexy Steven Meisel shot video for Prada's fall 2012 campaign. Models Antonia Wesseloh, Ondria Hardin, Kelly Mittendorf,
Last week, we got a sneak peek of Prada's fall/winter 2011 ad campaign starring modeling newbie Kelly Mittendorf. This morning, Prada sent us two new images from the campaign featuring those crazy fuzzy swim caps and plastic paillettes and models Ondria Hardin and Frida Gustavsson. With a backdrop of multi-colored tile and green and blue velvet couches, the campaign solidifies Prada's maximalist take on fall. Yep, it's a lot, but somehow also super pretty. Take a look.
