I've been on a couple photo shoots in the past, but nothing as crazy-glamorous as yesterday's at Milk Studios. Not only did I get my makeup done and my hair blown out, but Rankin--yes, the Rankin--took my photo. You see, the legendary photographer has an exhibit opening at Milk today, as well as a new project where he's photographing 100 people for $100 a pop from June 1-5. As a nice little perk, Milk and Rankin's team invited editors over yesterday to get their portraits done.
If you have even the slightest interest in fashion, you know photographer Rankin and his work. Renowned for his intimate portraits--and for co-founding the iconic culture and photography mag Dazed & Confused--he’s shot everyone from Madonna to the Dove “Real Women” campaign. Rankin’s latest exhibit, "Open," is coming to Milk Gallery from May 24 to June 10 and is a culmination of 20 years of his work. But maybe more importantly: from June 1-5 at Milk Studios, you have a chance to participate in Rankin Live. The photographer is inviting people with “unique personalities and style” aged 16 and over to submit a photo and brief statement. The most original applicants will be invited to Milk to pose for a portrait shot by Rankin. For this project he’s working with Oxfam, the international development agency whose mission is to alleviate poverty and suffering. Each portrait will cost $100, and all the profits will go to Oxfam. $100 for a Rankin portrait? That's unbelievable.
Katie Grand is, by far, one of my all time favorite fashion heroes. Every time I work with her and for her I learn SO much. Not only is she one of the only editors that gives me the space and platform to do much of my favorite styling work, she gives me the opportunity to collaborate with the BEST people in the business. For that, I will forever be in Katie's debt. When I worked for Katie at Pop magazine, she taught me what it means to be a fashion visionary and an incredible business woman. I'm not going to go into a long spiel here about her biography; I really wanted to chat with her specifically about styling. For this column, I will be conducting a series of interviews with people in different fashion roles who hire and work with stylists, or the iconic stylists themselves. Katie answered my questions with the honesty and humor that I always appreciate from her. I learned so much reading her answers, I hope you guys do too! Here it goes.... SL: How long have you been styling? It began when you started Dazed & Confused with Rankin and Jefferson Hack in 1993, right? KG: Yeah, I was at St Martins and met Rankin and Jefferson at a bar in the basement of the Trocadero called DNA and I started working on Dazed, initially folding magazines, and then my first story was a white t-shirt story, shot by a friend of mine, Gary, who was at St. Martins doing photography. SL: What led you to styling versus doing another job in fashion, like design?

Sick of phrases like "You Would" and "F*** Africa" being tagged on the large white space underneath "Rag & Bone Bids Farewell to Cafe Colonial...," they will hold a competition where artists can submit their work for consideration. The art will be voted on by Rag & Bone's Facebook fans and the winner will be provided with all necessary painting materials and a $1000 store credit. Check out their site for more info. {Rag & Bone} Major Shuffling in Paris? The rumor mill is running wild following speculation that Stefano Pilati is done at YSL. Apparently, that is untrue, at least for the next 3 years, which is the length of the contract he just signed. There are also rumors that Karl Lagerfeld will retire from Chanel after his 30th anniversary in 2012 and be replaced by Alber Elbaz, whose position at Lanvin will then be filled by Oliver Theyskens. Lagerfeld retiring?? What? {Hint}
