Vogue may have gotten snubbed at last year's National Magazine awards--but this year the mag took home top honors.
The past four days have been a non-stop party for a lot of fashion people here in New York. And those Halloween parties have been well-documented. The Tribeca Grand's Overlook Hotel party, the Boom Boom Room's fete and last night's V party hosted by Terry Richardson drew the most fashion-heavy crowds and, as we all know, fashion people like to dress up. They also seem to like obscure references--many of their costumes were tough to identify, but still fun to look at. So, from Alexa Chung to Joan Smalls to Marc Jacobs, here are a bunch of fashion people in their Halloween best! Photos: Terry's Diary, Paper, Style.com, BFA
Remember when Nicki Minaj sat next to Anna Wintour at the Carolina Herrera show? Well, she was actually flanked by two Condé editors that day. To her right was W editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi and apparently that's who we should have had our eye on in terms of cover speculation. moreIt makes a lot more sense, actually. As I'm sure you remember, last year's cover girl for the Art Issue was a very naked (and very criticized) Kim Kardashian. Minaj graces one of two November issue covers--the other, which was revealed yesterday, features relatively unknown Chinese model Sui He shot by Max Vadukul in collaboration with Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei. For Minaj'scover story, Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli and stylist Edward Enniful transformed the hip hop star into some of the most famous courtesans in history: the Marquise de Montespan, Comtesse du Barry, Madame de Pompadour, and Madame Rimsky-Korsakov.
Emma Watson Attending Oxford: Apparently, Brown just didn't do much for the superstar. No worries, she's not dropping out- just doing her junior year abroad...in her home country. {Vogue UK} Olivia Palermo is the Cover Girl of the Summer: The former "Elle accessories editor" (read: reality TV star) is now taking over the newsstands in a new way. She's covering three different magazines this summer, looking unsurprisingly drop-dead gorgeous on each one. Love her or hate her, this girl has got some serious style. {MTV Style} Kirsten Dunst Models in Another Friend's Look Book: Opening Ceremony just posted the look book for their collaboration with Reyn Spooner, known for his Hawaiin print shirts. It stars Jonathan Rice, Jenny Lewis and Kirsten Dunst all looking very cute. Kirsten's boyfriend Jason Boesel shot it. Hopefully Scott Sternberg isn't too jealous. Also, we guess hipsters wearing Hawaiian prints is going to be a thing. {Opening Ceremony}
Check Out This Striped, Color-tastic Editorial: Models lounging around a playground in candy-colored zig-zags, florals, swirls and colorblocks is exactly what we needed to remind us that it's summer, now that the sun has disappeared. The crazy patterned socks are particularly adorable. {Contributing Editor} Alex Wang's Accessories to Debut With eBay Exclusive: Everyone wants them, everyone will kill to have them, so what better way to democratically level the playing field than eBay? On Friday, June 17, you can hash it out on the web for four exclusive styles before the complete official release in July. { Fashionologie} W's New Mission To Be "Fashion's After Party": Stefano Tonchi has helmed the mag for a year now with less success than hoped for. So, a new ad campaign featuring high-heeled masked models (presumably at some glamorous party the likes of which you are not invited to), will be splashed about the web and on NYC taxis in an attempt to garner excitement about the poor performing publication. {WWD}
When Stefano Tonchi went to W, we had high hopes. The former T editor had a clear vision for the mag that we were excited for him to carry out. Now we're just bored. At least with the covers.
In honor of Valentines Day, we present to you, the cutest fashion couples. They're stylish and they love each other. Aww... nextpage nextpage nextp
Last night television provided audiences with yet another romanticized depiction of what it's like to work and intern in the fashion industry. This time, the culprit was Gossip Girl. On the episode, Blair Waldorf and Dan Humphrey eagerly began their first day as lowly interns at the high fashion glossy, W. Though the scenes were filmed in the actual W offices and featured staffers as extras, the inaccuracies of the plot line would make anyone who has ever spent hours slaving in a fashion closet cringe. First of all, wearing heels is like intern suicide. Good luck running all over the city with an armload of garment bags, or loading trunks of shoes onto truck beds in those Miu Miu pumps, Blair!
Media is evolving at the breakneck speed of Twitter and traditional print outlets and new media ones are constantly reorganizing and reshuffling mastheads to ensure that their publications continue to rake in advertisers and stay alive. The world of fashion media is no exception. This year there was so much playing of editorial musical chairs, we devised little flow charts to try to keep it all straight. From Carine Roitfeld's shocking departure from Vogue Paris to the fat-hating Marie Claire blogger who pissed just about everyone off, here are the top ten fashion media stories of the year.
Karl On Kate: Karl Lagerfeld could care less about who will make Kate Middleton's wedding dress (even though we do). But he does have some nice things to say about the future princess: "She is very different from Princess Diana, and seems very well balanced and a happy person. She is chic in a way the position needs. Let’s wait and see.” {WWD} The Outnet Gets an Overhaul: The Outnet is celebrating their new look by having a massive Alexander Wang sale. We are not sad about it. {Racked} The Times Tries to Figure Out Why People Like Kim Kardashian: The newspaper of record takes a look at the empire Kim K. and her sisters have created. {The New York Times} Tonchi In The Hot Seat at W? : NY Post media columnist Keith Kelly has it from a reliable source that Condé Nast isn't pleased with Stefano Tonchi's work at W because they don't like "direction the magazine is taking." When asked for comment, Condé told New York's Daily Intel that Kelly's story was, "the furthest thing from the truth. The company is thrilled with the work — newsstand and web, everything is fine. Our sales are strong." Right... {Daily Intel}
WWD's got the sales stats on the all important September issues. A quick break down of the winners and losers: Who's up? Harper's Bazaar: The Hearst title won big this past September with Jennifer Aniston on the cover. Sales were up 22%, making it the best-selling issue in seven years. Aniston's love life (or lack thereof) has always moved tabloid weeklies, and apparently she can move fashion titles too. Go Jen. Glamour: Not a huge increase for Glamour, but their J.Lo cover upped newsstand sales about 1%. Marie Claire: Only a slight increase here too--the mag's MK Olsen cover was up 1% from last year. Of course, these are pre-Maura Kelly numbers. It remains to be seen whether Kelly's controversial blog post will have an effect on sales and subscriptions. Who's Down? W: Sales for W's September issue under new EIC Stefano Tonchi were down a whopping 14%. We're hopeful about Tonchi's redesign and direction for the mag, so hopefully the drop can be chalked up to some kind of adjustment period. We're sure October, featuring a naked Kim Kardashian, fared better.
A very naked Kim Kardashian graces the cover of W's November "Art" issue with the headline "It's all about me...I mean you..I mean me" strategically covering her bits. Who would have thought the reality star, best known for her butt and twitter following, would figure into Stefano Tonchi's new “Who, What, When, Where and Why In The World of Style” tagline for the mag? At a press conference about the revamping of W a couple months ago, Tonchi said he would take the high fashion Conde title beyond the clothes to tell the stories of interesting people. Kim Kardashian might not be interesting to everyone. She's certainly not of interest, I would think, to W's readers as a fashion person--her sartorial choices extend to skimpy bikinis and skin tight mini dresses and her design experience is limited to a "collaboration" with Bebe. But I don't doubt that Lynn Hirschberg's profile of Kim (out tomorrow) will be interesting. And her naked body will certainly sell magazines.
