About this time every year, we find ourselves spending an inordinate amount of time day-dreaming about our summer vacations--and even more time fant
Theme dressing for a holiday can be tricky. You want to be festive, but not costume-y. It's especially challenging on the Fourth of July when you ha
The woes of adapting to a new season never seem to end when you're short on savings and want everything that shows up on the runways. It's tough to update a wardrobe without spending a ton, especially in this city. The key is prioritizing: decide what's worth splurging on, what you're going to skip (you don't need to sport EVERY trend--you'll look maniacal), and what's trendy but not worth a large price tag. Easier said than done? Here's a guide to some of the season's biggest looks from easily-accessible retailers, all under $50 (with a few exceptions).
Amazon Launches a Flash Sale Site: The new members only site--a la Gilt and Rue La La--called Myhabit, will host four to six sales each day beginning at noon at up to 60 percent off retail price. The site launches today and scheduled brands include Elizabeth and James, Vena Cava, and Betsey Johnson. {WWD, subscription required} Inside the Costume Institute Gala: You've seen all of the red carpet photos, but Vogue's WIlliam Norwich takes you inside the Met for the exclusive party. {Vogue} Giorgio Armani Designed Vestments for a Bishop: Monsignor Domenico Mogavero wore his designer robes to a church inauguration on the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria where Armani has a home. {Telegraph} PPR Acquires Volcom: The California skate and surf company joins Puma as part of PPR's growing mass market division. {WWD, subscription required}

LOS ANGELES--I really love my job. I'm writing at the desk in my room at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, watching people gather around Mann's Chinese Theater. Later on, I'll be heading down to the Tropicana Pool to get my requisite 15 minutes of daily sun while I schedule this weekend's stories. Life isn't too bad. Not at all. The occasion? I've been here since Wednesday to celebrate/cover the Volcom swim show, which took place last night at the Cooper Design Space in downtown LA. I was thrilled to be invited on this trip. Not only because it's an excuse to get out of the office and visit a few West Coast friends, but it was also the perfect opportunity to learn more about the swimwear industry. Swimsuits are an ultra-lucrative category because they're easy to construct, inexpensive to produce, and people tend to buy one or two new ones each year. Indeed, the influence and value of Mercedes-Benz Miami Swim Fashion Week--which is taking place right now--has increased exponentially over the last few years. The other great thing about the swimwear industry is that each brand only hosts one runway show per year, which means it's much easier for buyers to work with the brands on styles and additional orders. But back to the matter at hand.
