Everlane Co-Founder Launches New Brand

Michael Preysman (pictured above) announced Tuesday he is launching a new brand built around the same values of sustainability and "radical transparency" as Everlane, the brand he co-founded in 2011 and was the CEO of until 2022. This time, he says, the label will not work with private equity or venture capital ownership. The announcement comes days after news broke that fast-fashion retailer Shein had acquired Everlane. Givenchy's New Creative Hire

Givenchy has named Marco De Vincenzo as head of leather goods design. He will work under creative director Sarah Burton and be responsible for growing the brand's leather goods category. Bella Hadid's Fragrance Brand Announces Funding, New CEO

Bella Hadid's fragrance brand 'Ôrebella closed a Series A funding round led by Silas Capital and with participation from Celebrands, which helped Hadid launch the company. Alongside the fundraise, 'Ôrebella announced its first CEO, Anish Agarwal, who was most recently CEO of T3 Micro. Veronica Beard has promoted Stephanie Unwin from president to CEO. In her new role, she will continue to shape the company's strategy, growth and operations. More than 1,000 guests gathered at Jungle Plaza in the Miami Design District to see the work of graduating students selected by Dean of Fashion Mario Braghieri to represent IMM's class of 2026. Titled La Grande Bellezza, a nod to the school's Italian roots, the evening opened with a message from Miami-Dade mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who congratulated the student designers while recognizing IMM's status as the first international fashion school in the United States to receive official accreditation.

Across the runway, the work moved from menswear to womenswear, between discipline and abandon. Intersections, whether between personal identity, fashion genre or cultural influence, became a thread connecting many of the collections.

Among the designers, Danna Anton described Fluid Void as an exploration of "the fragile point where beauty and danger meet," a phrase that suited her sculptural column gowns and outerwear. Sarah Berto's To the Line injected motorsport aggression into black tailoring through leather, denim and raised red embellishment. Mariana Jimenez lent workwear a fresh patina through rust-effect denim and Swarovski embroidery, while Cristina Uribe's standout sculptural pieces turned Colombian craft into physical architecture, combining woven forms and monumental accessories.

From mermaids rendered in shell shimmer and pearled iridescence to Brutalist silhouettes drawn from architectural force, the range of work on show was impressively diverse and powerfully coherent.

Since opening in 2018, Istituto Marangoni Miami has built a school that brings European fashion expertise into a city shaped by North, South and Central American cultures. The presence of Karolina Kurkova added industry wattage, but the evening's focus rightly stayed fixed on a fresh generation of design talent emerging from Miami's particular heat.

"I have always been surrounded and inspired by strong women and Diane is the ultimate embodiment of that," Zankov said in a statement. "The DVF woman is a rebel – confident, curious and independent. It is an honor and privilege for me to build on Diane's legacy and to carry the brand into the future."

Zankov launched his own eponymous knitwear label in 2020, and will continue to steer operations at his own brand in addition to his responsibilities at Diane von Furstenberg. With a knack for color play and adventurous silhouettes, Zankov won the CFDA American Emerging Designer of the Year Award in 2024.

The designer's new role is a homecoming of sorts. He previously joined Diane von Furstenberg in 2014, and stayed for four years before venturing out to unveil his own brand. Last September, Zankov also designed a capsule collection with Diane von Furstenberg at Bergdorf Goodman.

Von Furstenberg founded her namesake label in 1972, and quickly established herself as a fashion industry icon by inventing the wrap dress in 1974. The label has since evolved into a global brand with an emphasis on bold colors and prints that emphasize, rather than constrict, a woman's silhouette.

"I applaud Graziano [de Boni, DVF CEO]'s vision. I am excited to watch Henry's designs, sense of color and effortless sensibility seduce a new generation," von Furstenberg said in a statement.

Printemps’ perfume setup is vastly different from those inside other retailers like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and even Sephora. Mass-marketed designer scents have long been the bread and butter of department stores’ fragrance offerings. But those established perfumes simply aren’t cutting it for today’s diehard fragrance consumers.

The perfume boom, which really took off during the Covid-19 pandemic, completely transformed how we experience fragrance. Perfume became a key element of self expression, Asia Grant, fragrance creator, consultant and founder of Scent Social Club tells Fashionista: “As people go through the process of exploring themselves and understanding their own nuances, they often crave a perfume that can do that alongside them.”

This has led to a rise in independent perfume brands, which fragrance enthusiasts find “offer more soul and storytelling,” notes Grant. Now, more than ever, shoppers are turning their noses up at mainstream scents, and actively seeking out indie options. According to a report by Business Research Insights, 58% of consumers want unique scents. As a result, the global niche perfume market is projected to expand from $8.55 billion in 2025 to $22.47 billion by 2035.

The numbers are significant, and retailers recognize this. If they don’t expand their perfume offerings beyond big names, they risk missing out on a growing clientele. It’s become a race for retailers to acquire these customers. The question is: Who's winning?

I spoke with Sephora, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Printemps, and they all said — in one way or another — that niche perfumes are an important part of their business. Moda Operandi and Violet Grey declined to comment, but they, too, have expanded their fragrance edits to include a variety of under-the-radar and emerging brands. All of them make an effort to provide distinct shopping experiences. 

Printemps, for example, visibly prioritizes the indie offerings with the front-and-center marble table display. Ariel Fantasia, the store's head of beauty and jewelry buying, tells Fashionista the goal was to create a “playground of discovery” for shoppers.

“Not only is finding smaller fragrance brands incredibly rewarding — and so much fun — it also gives us a point of differentiation from other multi-branded retailers,” Fantasia says. The in-stock selection includes a range of classic scent categories, more esoteric aromas and exclusives found only at Printemps. “When buying our inventory I try to make sure that there is as little overlap as possible, [in terms of scent profiles or note combinations], between brands,” she adds, “which builds upon the sense of discovery and playfulness for customers — and they’re truly responding to it.”

Stéle, a New York-based independent fragrance store, is similarly built around discovery. “Instead of curating a store based on what you’re ‘supposed to sell’ — brands with heavy marketing backing and manufactured demand — we built what we wanted to see,” says Stéle co-founder Matt Belanger, who launched the business alongside co-founder Jake Levy. “We focused on what we, as consumers, are drawn to: human-led independent brands with strong ethos and a distinct point of view.”

It’s easier for an independent store like Stéle to give smaller brands their shining moment, and typically, in an environment that's more inviting for customers. I know I’ve felt pressured to buy something at department stores because of pushy salespeople; that behavior is the antithesis of what Belanger and Levy have built: Stéle is more experimental and relaxed — patrons are encouraged to explore (if they want assistance, an associate can and will gladly help) and, because the team is always bringing in new brands, finding something you’ve never seen before is a virtual guarantee. “In a large chain environment, indie can quickly feel ubiquitous. But in a tightly curated setting, it still feels like discovery. That difference is everything,” Belanger and Levy say.

What’s interesting is department stores haven’t always put indie perfumes on the back burner. Steven Gontarski, the senior manager of brand and public relations for Luckyscent and Scent Bar, considered Barneys to be the niche perfume maven in its heyday. “When Barneys closed, that left this big void in the world of niche perfume and some brands just kind of lost their home,” he says.

From there, niche and indie perfumery weren't on many department stores' radar. Independent retailers have greatly benefited from this lapse and grown their clientele as a result. Scent Bar, for instance, has experienced immense profitability and continues to grow; it currently has four locations — two in Los Angeles and two in New York City — with plans to open another in Dallas. 

With the success of independent fragrance retail, as well as the proliferation of #perfumetok and creators sharing their most unique fragrance finds, traditional retailers are finally catching on to the fact that niche perfume brands are major sales drivers. “I think department stores are now trying to figure out ways to keep their sales going,” says Gontarski. “And in perfume, they see that there's excitement with niche brands.”

Sephora caught on relatively early. “When Sephora launched over 25 years ago, fragrance was our largest category and what many clients initially knew us for,” Carye Campbell, SVP of fragrance merchandising at Sephora, says. As the retailer grew, its priorities shifted to focus on makeup and skin care, but it's attention has returned to fragrance over the past few years. 

Due to Sephora’s reach, marketing initiatives and social media, the indie brands the retailer brings on tend to go viral — think Phlur, Commodity and Skylar. This allows the labels to toe the line between indie and mainstream, making Sephora the ultimate incubator for brands that want to scale.

Recent additions to Sephora’s indie fragrance lineup include Borntostandout and Fugazzi. However, while both have created some quirky, off-the-beaten-path scents, Sephora stocks only their more palatable options that have mass appeal. Sure, these brands will get more eyes on them, but shoppers lose out on a deeper sniffing experience. This is where Sephora lags in the niche race. 

“Retailers need to be okay with taking a bit of a risk when bringing in niche brands," says Tynan Sinks, host of the Smell Ya Later podcast. “Uncertainty is never easy when there’s money to be made, but it’s not only about the smell. How shoppers learn about the scent and the lengths they go to in order to source it are also part of the fun.”

Personally, I’ve struggled to get a feel for any scent in Sephora’s fragrance department because of the omnipresent perfume clouds caused by over-spritzing, as well as a lack of sampling. (Note: While Sephora does offer some perfume samples, they do not carry vials of every scent sold in store.)

Nordstrom, on the other hand, is doubling down on its sampling initiatives. According to Pierre Vouard, an adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Cosmetic and Fragrance Marketing Program, the retailer's New York flagship keeps empty one-milliliter vials stocked, and sales associates can fill them with any fragrance. “They also have this tool where you can search for notes on a screen, and it will help you decide what to smell,” he says. “This technology enhances the experience.”

Sampling and new technology are just part of Nordstrom’s niche perfume strategy. “We are working to be a place of discovery, and sometimes that means tapping into immersive experiences,” Autumne West, Nordstrom’s national beauty director, shares.

The most recent example coincided with the launch of Amouage Love Hibiscus: The brand built a large-scale immersive installation at Nordstrom's New York flagship. “Love Hibiscus launched exclusively at Nordstrom, so this was truly a discovery moment you could only have with us,” West says, adding that shoppers loved it. “This reminded us that customers want more than a transaction — they want to discover something, to play and to be inspired. These activations let us show up for them in a way that feels really fun and intentional.”

For fragrance consumers who actively seek out indie perfumes, it’s not enough to just fall in love with a scent; they want to learn the inspiration and be fully immersed in the story of it. Bloomingdale’s noticed this and curated a full calendar of fragrance masterclasses at locations nationwide. 

“We bring fragrance to life through hands-on workshops led by experts and perfumers, where our customers can really engage with the craft, from understanding raw materials to exploring layered notes and fragrance families,” Marissa Galante Frank, the retailer's beauty and accessories fashion director, says. “Fragrance Fair is also a key moment for us. On May 9, it takes place across all stores, bringing together leading perfumers and brands through interactive experiences that help customers discover their next signature scent.”

For indie fragrance brands, immersive experiences are a key part of winning over new customers, as well as fostering stronger retail partnerships. “The brands don't just want any shelf space, especially because they're telling a very specific story and trying to create a very specific experience,” says Grant. The retailers that are, in essence, "winning the race" intersect exploration with storytelling within their stores. “It’s so much more than stocking the product.”

C86 Holdings acquires The Face

C86 Holdings has acquired The Face, a British music and fashion magazine founded in 1980, from Wasted Talent Limited. After relaunching in 2019, The Faceshuttered earlier this year. The Face's website currently states that it "will return," though an exact relaunch date has not been announced. Isabel Marant Names New CEO

Catherine Jacquet has been appointed CEO of Isabel Marant, effective next month. Loewe Partners With Spain's National Soccer Teams

Loewe has entered a four-year partnership with Spain's national soccer teams. Richemont Sales Up 11% in Q4 2026

In Q4 2026, Richemont's group sales were up 11% to €22.4 billion ($26 billion). Its jewelry maisons, which include Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, saw sales rise by 8% to €16.5 billion ($19.2 billion). The British Fashion Council (BFC) announced a four-year commitment to strengthen and expand its London Show Rooms (LsR) presence in Paris. LsR brings together BFC Foundation designers, BFC Designer Members and Fashion East designers to showcase British menswear. Instead of returning home to Toronto after graduating from Parsons School of Design, Kaelen Haworth ended up staying in New York City for another 15 years building her two fashion brands, Kaelen and Second Sight. Haworth always wanted to open her own store ("I'm better at curating and editing than I was at designing, that's just the truth," she confessed), and once she moved back to Toronto in 2023, she decided it was time to jump into retail. Absolutely Fabrics — an independent multi-brand boutique stocking emerging and established labels alike — opened its doors that same year to become a hub for brand discovery.

"There's a lot of opportunity here [in Toronto]," Haworth said. "There's a lot of people who are really interested in fashion, but don't have access to a lot of these brands because no one's buying them in Toronto."

Absolutely Fabrics stocks well-known names like Marni, Proenza Schouler, Fforme and Christopher John Rogers alongside up-and-coming designers like Conner Ives, Ashlyn and Torishéju. Now, the boutique is expanding beyond its 613 Queen St. West location to a 7,000-square-foot flagship in Toronto's Summerhill neighborhood this fall, which Haworth said will help the retailer further reach its core consumer.

Fashion videos promising to expose viewers to “niche,” “underrated,” “cool-girl” brands have flooded the feeds and are gaining traction, particularly across Instagram and TikTok. They speak to a recent evolution away from those fleeting trends that require instant participation before dying at week’s end. Now, people are searching for a visually appealing style that speaks to them and offers a semblance of individuality. It's for that reason that these “niche cool-girl brands” videos tend to do well and catch the eye of the fashion-curious.

Mia Jacobs, senior strategist for youth fashion at trend forecasting firm WGSN, believes “we’ve moved past the era of micro-trends and core aesthetics and entered a period of hyper-individuality, where the focus is on developing personal style.” She continues: “Niche is the new norm for Gen Z; they are prioritizing authenticity and ‘IYKYK’ (if you know, you know) culture to signal community and personal values.”

This video format is how Yagmur Tok found her digital footing. The writer-turned-creative strategist-turned-content creator began by focusing on “underrated Turkish cool-girl brands” to platform designers from her home country. After seeing how her audience responded, she expanded to other independent and vintage brands she deemed niche or underrated. “People are sick of shopping at the same five shitty places and buying the same things,” she tells Fashionista.

Being the subjects of these videos is quite an interesting experience, according to designers like Leeann Huang and Ella Mae, both owners of eponymous independent labels dubbed as “niche” or “cool girl” by voices on the internet.

Mae tries to limit social media use in her personal life, but she's quite familiar with it as a brand owner. She was introduced to this trend after being tagged in various videos of the sort. “Sustainable,” “L.A.-based,” and “whimsical” are the descriptors most commonly associated with her brand within the “cool-girl” umbrella. “I'm happy to be mentioned and included, and I do hope they're genuinely helpful for people too, who are trying to find a shopping niche,” she says.

The videos she's most thrilled to be featured in are the “sustainable” cool girl ones, as they affirm that people are thinking consciously about their shopping habits — "because then people are doing something good, even if it's just for the sake of the trend,” she says.

Fellow Los Angeles-based designer Huang is used to seeing this type of content and believes it is in line with the rise of quicker, short-format information spreading. “People are hungry to learn these things, but it’s harder, attention span-wise, nowadays to have to read through an online article," she says. "It's fun when people learn about my brand, and it's interesting to hear what they have to say. I do think they're pushing me out to their audience, which is always helpful.”

When formatting this content, Tok aims to strike a balance between curation and education. Her goal is to people discover where to go for their particular interests and educating them on larger fashion topics — such as runway shows and trends — without explicitly telling them to “buy this outfit” or “wear this top.”

Tok and the designers see these curated videos as one solution to the overwhelm the digital sphere can invoke. With social feeds that can feel overpolluted, it can be helpful to have influencers do the research to uncover hidden gems, regardless of the subject. They also believe more consumers would shop at smaller brands if they knew where to find them. Tok says quite candidly, “Nobody knows what the hell they’re doing [including myself at times], and there’s so much pressure for women and a lot of noise from random people.”

As Mae adds, “the content machine never stops,” so having parameters to go off of — while still feeling a sense of autonomy to explore — can provide the relief many are searching for. “There's an aspirational piece to the cool girl,” Tok says. “Like, ‘if I buy this, then I could be a better version of myself.’”

Examining consumer behaviors and desires further, Jacobs says the popularity of this trend points to three factors. First, “the online fashion community is shifting from passive consumption to more active curation, where the focus is on building a wardrobe that reflects authenticity and self-expression rather than rigid style rules,” she explains. Second, “consumers also want to be part of a designer’s journey or ‘fandom’ rather than just an end user, which leads to stronger brand affinity for independent labels.” And finally, “in an AI-saturated landscape, we’re seeing a renewed reverence for human craftsmanship and the transparency of slow fashion — knowing exactly who made your clothes is becoming a status symbol.”

Jacobs notes that trend forecasters are seeing the rise of “anti-algorithm dressing,” which rebukes generic styles primed for AI replication, as well as “low-consumption” and “de-influencing” trends that seek to promote “high-quality, versatile pieces with long-term appeal while also encouraging consumers to seek out unique items that set their wardrobes apart.” This marks a significant departure from the “buy now” content on the other side of these apps.

Tok shares that, both anecdotally and through direct numbers, she has seen her audience opt into shopping vintage brands and indie labels, as opposed to the familiar fast-fashion conglomerates.

When independent designers are featured in a viral “cool-girl” style video, they at the very least experience a boost in exposure. “I definitely think keywords like ‘this cool niche brand’ rings in people’s minds and gets their attention,” Huang says. While the higher price point of their slow-produced garments may lead to a slower customer buy-in, the exposure broadens their audience and eventually leads to more sales. Huang and Mae both confirm that there are specific pieces that continue to sell out due to this online virality. They have now become recognizable markers for their brands. (For example, the Monday dress in Ivory and Twisting Vines skirt for Ella Mae, and Fruit Sticker Bags or Blinking Eye skirts for Leeann Huang).

When Huang first released the Blinking Eye skirt, she knew she had something special, yet the units priced at $330 each weren’t selling. Then came the viral video showcasing how cool and unique they were, and she sold 35 skirts, leading to approximately three times the revenue from the month prior.

Seeing what resonates with content creators’ audiences, as well as their own organic ones, also allows designers to understand which audiences their work resonates with. For two SoCal-based independent brands, social media is the central avenue through which their designs are able to reach places such as New York, San Francisco, London, Japan and Australia. It has created opportunities that may not have been possible without the capital or foundation needed to weather the traditional, often gatekept fashion industry. While this expansion in consumer base can also be attributed to their own marketing efforts and traditional press, the sheer impact of social media is undeniable.

Tok is able to track the tangible effects her content has on brands through the ShopMy platform. Thousands of clicks, followers, sold-out items and hundreds of dollars in affiliate commission can be attributed to her highlighting a brand and linking it on the platform. To that point, she cannot stress enough how valuable she believes ShopMy can be for independent designers today.

“It's awesome to uplift these designers," she says. "I try to share Turkish designers, Palestinian designers, a lot of designers from the Middle East, Africa and Europe. I want to [uplift] point of view, quality and craft.”

There are limitations to these types of videos, however, which makes Tok feel conflicted at times. The price point for one can be a deterrent to her audience, who may either experience economic constraints or, due to fast fashion, are now woefully unaware of the true price of ethical clothing production. Secondly, and more conflicting, is the limited sizing many, but particularly vintage niche brands, carry.

Huang highlights how difficult — and often deal-breaking — it can be for brand owners who cannot quite grasp the concept of “always-on” social media culture. Meanwhile, Mae shares that establishing legitimacy amid the online noise can be a challenge. Though social media provides an equal platform, it can blur the lines between established businesses and DIY creators, prompting consumers to believe they can replicate designs rather than invest in the brands themselves. “Do you sell the patterns for this? I want to make my own,” is a real question Mae receives regarding her designs.

In a similar vein, social virality can make independent designers more susceptible to fast-fashion dupes; while dupes affect brands at all levels, they can be especially damaging to smaller designers that lack the notoriety, support or investment of larger luxury labels.

“It’s a delicate balance," Jacobs notes. "Viral exposure can create a sudden surge in orders that can overwhelm a small brand’s infrastructure, manufacturing capabilities or stock levels, and can be even more challenging depending on the brand’s geographical location.”

While supporting independent brands takes a multi-tiered approach, all parties agree there is a growing desire for fashion with a more personal touch, and “cool-girl” branding may just be the clever marketing angle needed to carry this shift forward.

At 25 years old, she is already living a life many designers work years to achieve: She made a custom "Paper Doll" look featured in Styles' "Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally," album art; designed a rose petal dress PinkPantheress wore for an on-stage performance; and landed a feature in Vogue Portugal's September 2024 issue. Most recently, Simone Ashley sported Macy Grimshaw at an event during "The Devil Wears Prada 2" press run. 

Grimshaw's rapid rise in industry attention is largely thanks to her collaboration with stylist Harry Lambert. He reached out to her shortly after she started her master's program, commissioning her to do a custom piece for Emma Corrin for Vogue Germany. "That was the first of many," she tells Fashionista. "He just kept commissioning me really cool artistic pieces. He would come with me at a brief, and then I'd always come back with a lot of crazy ideas because I think he comes to me when he wants more crazy stuff."

Lambert also brought Grimshaw on for commercial projects: The young British-French designer produced four SKUs — a coat, gloves and two dresses — for the Harry Lambert x Disney collection sold at Selfridges. It was arguably one of her most difficult tasks, she reflects. "I was scared. Figuring out how to produce on a commercial scale in a really short time for a high-end client, where things would be sold at a high price, made me nervous. But I did it, and it was really fun."

But the designer's latest endeavor is by far her most challenging to date: figuring out her post-grad career steps. When you've already designed for A-list celebrities, been featured in Vogue and sold at a luxury retailer (all before getting your degree), what's the next step to take? That's a question she's still contemplating. 

"That's everyone's first question, 'What are you doing next?' And I'm like, '[Mine] too,'" she says, laughing. "I am being quite intentional with my time and trying to figure it out...I didn't even realize this, but I skipped quite a lot of steps that I feel like I was not meant to do." For most recent grads, the career trajectory is to work for a company and then venture out on their own — first with a ready-to-wear label, followed, hopefully, by a VIP and customs business.

Grimshaw, however, was thrown straight into celebrity work. (Save for a couple of internships she did with Victoria Beckham and Barcelona-based designer Luis de Javier.) "I feel like I missed this middle ground," she continues. Now, she's weighing her options of continuing to do custom work, branching out into ready-to-wear or working underneath a designer. So far, she's leaning towards the former, but is still keeping an open mind. 

"I've been quite enjoying making the bespoke one-of-one pieces because it's like I can spend a lot of time being really creative and making something super detailed and complex, which is my favorite thing to do," she says. "That's maybe the route I'm going to continue for now."

Part of Grimshaw's decision-making is considering who her target audience is. She describes her clientele as people who like wearing clothes that start conversations. "My pieces are quite bold," she says. "You see them from far away, and it might look like something else, but when you get up close, you're like, 'Wait, those are actually cigarettes,' or 'Those are pencil shavings.'"

That penchant for turning everyday materials into wearable art perfectly illustrates her brand ethos, she says. She first established that design approach while getting her undergraduate degree at Central Saint Martins. 

Her B.A. collection, for example, was inspired by her grandmother's experience with Alzheimer's disease. Grimshaw used photographs from her grandmother's archives as inspiration for prints she created throughout the six-piece lineup. She also worked with paper as a design medium to "express the fragility of memory," she says.

Fast forward to her M.A. thesis collection — styled by Lambert and presented during London Fashion Week Fall 2026 — which spotlighted leather-molded designs with printed graphics. It's Grimshaw's unique take on materiality that makes her work so distinct when worn by celebrity clientele. 

One of the creative's favorite commissioned pieces is a paper-molded poem dress Paloma Elsesser wore for a Vogue Germany feature. "I just imagined if you had a poem written on a paper and you scrunch it up as a ball — that was the dress," she says. "I really didn't know if it was going to work. I was very surprised that it turned out really well. Now, Harry has the dress propped up in his studio on display."

Despite the strong portfolio and industry recognition, Grimshaw faces other challenges. The biggest is figuring out commission pricing. She's the first to admit she's underpriced some of her work. "I'm not very financially literate," Grimshaw confesses. "I accidentally lose money, low-key. Sometimes I've put things a bit too low, because I'll price the rate for three days' work, but it may end up being five."

During one of her first commissions, a peer advised her to view each commission as the sole source of income. "She told me, 'Think about what you need to pay that month in terms of rent, covering the cost of making the things, and then make sure whatever price you're sending for this custom, it's going to cover that because you don't know when the next one is,'" she says. "I try to be reasonable, but I do always think about that advice, because it's true you never know when your next assignment will be."

It's also worth noting that Grimshaw understands that, as an emerging creative, exposure counts toward compensation. "As a young designer, you're trying to understand your worth, but you also don't want to miss out on the opportunity," she says. 

Still, she's got time to figure it out. Now that she's a recent graduate, Grimshaw returned to her parents' home in Hong Kong, thinking about her next steps. For the time being, she's working on a handful of private client orders and a collection she's presenting at London Fashion Week Spring 2027. 

"This is work that's going to hopefully support me, and I can just continue to make really beautiful art," she says. "I'm really young, and I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm like, 'Might as well try working for myself.' If it doesn't work, then I can go work for someone else after."

The undisclosed transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026. DAMAC Group will remain a "significant shareholder" once the deal is finalized, according to a press release.

The late Roberto Cavalli launched his eponymous brand in Florence in 1970 and soon made his mark on the fashion industry with his eye-catching prints and shimmering designs. The label, which is currently helmed by Fausto Puglisi, boasts celebrity fans including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion.

As for Roberto Cavalli's next steps, Marquee Brands plans to introduce new categories, services and experiential touchpoints across global markets. DAMAC aims to scale the brand's presence through Roberto Cavalli-branded residences and hospitality projects. Milan-based The Level Group will lead the development, manufacturing and distribution of Roberto Cavalli's women's and men's collections.

The 2026 version of the brand has gotten a true maximalist overhaul, from its colorful, cartoon-like packaging to its campy names and shade offerings as a whole. The brand (finally) unveiled its new product lineup on Wednesday after having teased its relaunch for months on social media.

"I think about beauty the way I think about fashion: It's an area for creativity and self-expression," Jacobs said in a press release of the philosophy behind the line. "Marc Jacobs Beauty represents joy, and is a celebration of how we can use makeup to express ourselves through color, through texture and shape."

Ahead of the launch announcement, the brand gathered beauty editors at The Standard Highline in New York City for a group Q&A with the designer himself. When asked how he approached the beauty re-launch, Jacobs again likened the process to that of conceiving a fashion line: "I thought, well, fashion is different than clothing to me. Clothing, you need to cover your body. Fashion is not what you need, it's what you want. It makes you dream. It's a form of self-expression," he said. "With fragrance and with beauty, I think there [are] certain qualities to both that are necessary, but it's not a necessity that I think about. It's about expression and it's about the aesthetic, the sort of desire aspect. These are things we want. These are things that we enjoy the ritual of using."

At (re)launch, the lineup is quite robust. It comprises long-wearing eyeliner pencils ("Drawn This Way Eyeliner" in 11 matte shades, five metallics and five "special effects" like glitter and duochromes for $26 each); cream-to-powder eye shadows ("Born Star Eyeshadow" in four matte shades, seven metallics and three iridescents for $29 each); volumizing mascara ("Flashes Mascara" in black, brown and blue for $29 each); cream blush sticks ("Joystick Blush Stick" in four pink shades, two oranges, one red, one purple and two bolder "trend shades" for $35 each); powder bronzer ("Legally Bronze Pressed Bronzer Powder in eight shades for $42 each); a glittery gel highlighter ("Money Shot Highlighter Gel" in one blue/pink reflective shade for $29) and lipstick ("Heart On Lipstick" in 10 neutral shades, one pink, one red, one purple and two electric hues for $34 each).

The packaging was a big focus for Jacobs. "We want[ed] to do something that's more disruptive and different," he told the editor group. "I just went home and sketched all these things...stars represent eyes for me. And the daisy, the innocence of the daisy, was like skin and a heart was like the lips. So it gave these things [an] emoji-like immediate quality that represented something in beauty."

The color play in the packaging was a directive from the designer as well: "Instead of going down the road of brown or black or silver or gold, [I thought] let's just make it colorful and exciting — why can't mascara be in a lavender container?"

This ethos, in turn, translated to the makeup shades themselves, with Jacobs describing the lineup as "a palette of color that you play with, rather than the basic, plain beauty."

Marc Jacobs Beauty 2.0 will make its debut on June 1 at Sephora.com (with an early Sephora App Preview on May 31); it will also roll out in-store in September, and will continue to introduce additional product debuts in the fall. Ahead, get a first look at the new Marc Jacobs Beauty lineup.

The designer acquired full ownership of his eponymous brand from Artémis, the Pinault family's private investment arm. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"I would like to thank Artémis for its support and commitment to the Maison throughout all these years," Valli said in a statement posted on Instagram. "This agreement now enables me to fully regain control of my brand and to pursue its development with enthusiasm and energy."

François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Groupe Artémis, added, "We have been delighted to support Mr. Giambattista Valli and to stand behind such a singular and demanding creative vision. After years of an inspiring collaboration, a new chapter is now opening in this entrepreneurial adventure, and I wish Giambattista every success in the next stage of his journey."

Artémis first invested in Giambattista Valli in 2017, then took a 90% stake in 2021. Over the years, the investment firm has helped the Italian label strengthen its infrastructure and grow its international presence.

Artémis' offloading of Giambattista Valli has been in the works for a while: Since last year, anonymous sources have reported that the investment arm quietly tapped banking firm Rothschild & Co to explore potential buyers. Then, this January, the Italian fashion house canceled its haute couture show. "The house is currently undertaking an in-depth reflection on the organization of its activities in order to ensure their long-term sustainability," Artémis said in a statement at the time.

Giambattista Valli's reacquisition comes amid an industry-wide reshuffling of brand ownership: Most recently, LVMH agreed to sell Marc Jacobs to WHP Global.

"Wholesale is important, but I think what wholesale is becoming, is changing," the founder of new London- and New York-based consultancy Agency Parnell tells Fashionista. Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, ongoing tariff turmoil and shifting consumer habits, the fashion industry is in flux. U.S. department stores are now reckoning with their stalled "bulk buying" strategies from the past five-to-10 years, Parnell says, which is paving the way for an updated approach to luxury wholesale. "When things soften, it creates room for new growth," he adds.

This April, Parnell opened his consultancy to rethink luxury fashion's wholesale strategies, but before that, he clocked in nearly 16 years of sales experience at top designer brands. "Ultimately, we might sell product at wholesale to retailers, but to understand the flow of product and to develop the understanding of what it's like to be on the floor and sell these things is really critical," he says.

After stints at DKNY, Mary Katrantzou, Varana, By Malene Birger and Stine Goya, Parnell was approached by a recruiter who asked a career-defining question: "Have you ever heard of Phoebe Philo?"

"I was like, 'Have I ever heard of Phoebe Philo?' What a bloody weird thing to say," Parnell quips. Fashion insiders are well versed in the cult of Philo, the British designer who helmed Chloé for five years and Celine for a decade before launching her eponymous luxury label in 2023. Parnell stood out from the applicant pool thanks to his global wholesale experience and ultimately snagged the gig of a lifetime leading Phoebe Philo's wholesale launch as the brand's wholesale director.

Phoebe Philo is now stocked in top retailers like Bergdorf Goodman, Dover Street Market and 10 Corso Como. "The strategy was interesting because it was very much about the distribution being discerning and selective, but at the same time, it wasn't the usual strategy that you would think of in wholesale," Parnell explains. Rather than solely focusing on brand mix, "it was more about the store vibe and the energy." He focused on the client, prioritizing stores where the team clearly understood who the target customer was.

After a year and a half of steering Phoebe Philo's wholesale strategy, Parnell exited the role after he discovered he had a heart condition and had to undergo open-heart surgery at 35 years old. While recovering, Parnell decided to finally take the leap and start his own wholesale consultancy. "I know it sounds so cliché, but it really became a thing of 'we have one life to live, let's make our mark,'" Parnell says.

Many agencies boast double-digit brand rosters, but Agency Parnell is taking a more deliberate approach to consulting. Parnell wants to function as an "embedded extension" of a brand: "Bringing in Agency Parnell allows [brands] to almost have a sales department where they can trust that we're going to operate with the care and detail and intention that an internal team would," he explains. It's a hands-on process where Agency Parnell aims to provide feedback across product development, pricing and retail distribution. "It's about being as close to them as possible," he shares.

Agency Parnell plans to onboard four brands in its first year, eventually growing its roster to eight clients over the next couple of years. Its inaugural partnership is with Meta Campania Collective, a Paris-based luxury label led by Jon Strassburg, Bottega Veneta's former chief merchandising officer. Much like Hinge (a.k.a. the dating app designed to be deleted), Agency Parnell wants to grow its brands to the point where they feel comfortable eventually taking their wholesale business in-house. "We should celebrate that moment because it's fantastic," Parnell says. "Well done."

After years of tight timelines and heavy workloads, Parnell understands the inherent stress that comes with a top wholesale position. He wants Agency Parnell to be a space that staff can "enjoy, and they can grow from it and really benefit from it," he shares. He even penned three manifestos addressed to prospective brands, retailers and the agency's team to hold himself accountable as the company grows. To further ensure these founding standards are upheld, Parnell also established a board of advisors consisting of Marco Gentile (former CEO of Theory Europe, chief commercial officer at Chloé and president of Burberry EMEIA) and Yvie Hutton (former director of designer relations and membership at the British Fashion Council).

Despite the challenges facing major department stores and e-commerce giants, Parnell points out that many global independent boutiques are "thriving" due to distribution control and a client-minded perspective. He singles out Labels in the Netherlands as a key example: Though the multi-brand luxury retailer is located outside of fashion's capitals, it caters to a core consumer base interested in brands like Rick Owens, Willy Chavarria, Acne Studios and Jil Sander.

"It should be about the customers, not just about what's hot because not every customer cares about what's hot," Parnell says. "It's got to be customer-centric."

Beyond curated brand mixes, indie boutiques' welcoming atmospheres are increasingly drawing in consumers. Luxury brands' gallery-like flagships can be intimidating in comparison. "To walk into a designer store like a Louis Vuitton store is actually quite intense for quite a lot of people," Parnell notes. In a multi-brand concept, shoppers can explore. "It's like a treasure trove that you want to get into and rummage through," he adds. "You can still have a beautiful display without it feeling like you can't touch it."

As Parnell looks to the future of wholesale, niche shops like Maxfield in Los Angeles, Hirshleifers in Manhasset and B1ock (pronounced "block") in China are at the forefront. "I'm a believer that the independent [business] has returned, but it's going to continue," Parnell says. He also hopes that the return of the U.K.'s High Street — or the hub of smaller businesses that were replaced by major chains — is nigh.

Ahead of a full-fledged indie renaissance, fostering an emotional connection is what's paying off across wholesale strategies. "That's where you can build a community that can trust your product, because it's got emotion and storytelling behind it, but it also is quality and product first," Parnell says. "I think that that's where the future is."

LuxExperience Q3 2026 Sales Were Flat

LuxExperience — the parent company of Net-a-Porter, Mr Porter, Mytheresa and Yoox — reported that its Q3 2026 sales were flat at €618.4 million ($717.5 million). Mytheresa's net sales increased 9.9% year-over-year (YoY) to €256 million ($297.1 million), while Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter's sales dropped 5.1% YoY to €231.6 million ($268.8 million). U.S. Small Business Sales on TikTok Shop Grew 66% in 2025

U.S. small businesses on TikTok Shop (a.k.a. sellers with less than $15 million in annual revenue) increased sales by 66% in 2025 compared to the year before. The e-commerce platform now has more than 215,000 small businesses actively selling in the U.S., up 25% year-over-year. TikTok Shop's new report also found that 67% of consumers go to the platform when they want to discover new products and brands, ahead of Amazon at 57%. {Modern Retail}

Gap Inc. Names New Banana Republic CEO

Gap Inc. appointed Donald Kohler as global brand president and CEO of Banana Republic, effective July 2026. Inside WHP and G-III's $925 Million Marc Jacobs Acquisition

Some details of WHP and G-III's acquisition of Marc Jacobs were released in G-III's filings to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Both G-III and WHP are putting up to $425 million into the joint venture that's buying the brand. G-III tagged its entire investment at about $500 million, which puts the purchase price at around $925 million. Mango Co-owner Arrested in Connection With Father's 2024 Death

Mango co-owner Jonathan Andic was arrested in the investigation into the death of his father Isak Andic, who founded the Spanish retailer and fell from a cliff while the two were hiking. Backstage, student designers shared this positive outlook while discussing their hopes for the future of fashion: "I'd like to see more diverse bodies on the runway, especially when it comes to size inclusivity, and also just fun, fantasy, spectacle, lots of color and print and sparkle," senior BFA student Alexander Flores told Fashionista. Senior BFA student Olivia Colley concurs: "I would love to see a lot more fun with materiality and textiles. I think that's what we're heading towards and I'm really excited to see how that intertwines with new silhouettes and just overall more fun."

Last year, all 283 graduating designers unveiled their creations on the runway, but for 2026, Parsons approached the end-of-year showcase differently. Faculty and a panel of industry professionals (including Sarah Kozlowski, Aaron Potts, Tracy Reese, Narciso Rodriguez, Peter Som and Wendy Waugh) selected the top looks from the graduating class, culminating in a total of 66 looks from 31 student designers.

"We have an amazing group of very different, unique voices this time," Parsons BFA Fashion Director Anna Lerner-Zwick said. "It's the top selected students of the year and everybody has strong things to say individually."

On the runway, Parsons' student designers explored a wide range of inspirations, including cultural homages and calls to action. Lulu Bozzino transformed actual 19th-century textile waste into a collection inspired by Spanish historical garments and bullfighting; Blue Achenbach sourced a taxidermied goose wing from a rural Ohio artisan as a focal point in a nest-inspired collection; Vy Le honored Vietnamese queer culture through bold prints and custom textiles; and Elisabed Amiredjibi turned fashion into a form of protest by addressing political instability in her home country of Georgia.

"I hope that these changemakers are really going to change what we're seeing right now in fashion," Lerner-Zwick said. "I always like to say fashion hasn't really changed much since I left and I would like to see a bit more diversity across the fashion industry in terms of what we're doing and who we're doing it for."

The show began with a performance by break dancer Lil Buck (who was wearing a look by graduating designer Noah Drew). Then came the runway show, opened by Coco Rocha, a supermodel and coach to the SCAD student models.

The 2026 show was one of SCAD's largest to date, spotlighting the work of more than 60 designers selected from the school's largest-ever graduating class in fashion design. Each of them presented a three-piece collection, resulting in a nearly 200-look lineup.

Despite the large cohort, the collections and their inspirations couldn't have been more unique: Courtney Cope's Victorian "soft goth" collection was inspired by the emotional transition from childhood to adulthood; Stella Beltranena made an eveningwear collection referencing the architectural beauty of shells; Juliette Hamilton's upcycled lineup referenced Swedish folklore; Valentina De Ponte created wearable versions of luggage, inspired by migration; and Natalie Clickman used handbraiding techniques to honor her Middle Eastern and Jewish culture.

Students from SCAD's Atlanta campus also got their work spotlighted: Jinseo Park's conceptual eveningwear line captured the hope and optimism to emerge from the chaos of South Korea's 2024 candlelight vigil; Teresa Zacapa referenced the Rococo era through a cosmic futuristic lens; and Madison Osborne addressed the catastrophe and "casual racism" surrounding Hurricane Katrina by leaning into how her family overcame the hardship.

"One way we as a family bonded was by watching the Saints games every Sunday," Osborne tells Fashionista, referencing sport elements in her collection. "We are talking about something really sad, but it's also beautiful and I wanted to have fun with this and pay homage to where I'm from and my family."

Closing out the show were eveningwear looks by six student designers who
were each mentored by Lanvin's creative director, Peter Copping.

"I really feel like SCAD gets overlooked sometimes because of our location," student designer Cope says. "So I hope you can see the amount of construction that is in each of these garments and how much work is put into every single person's collection. I hope everyone can realize that there's a good combination of conceptual and innovative collections, but also technique, functionality, and construction that back it up."

Simultaneously, it debuted a new jumbo 60mL size ($89), which, per the brand, was a "direct response to consumer demand." (The larger size, which is currently a dieuxskin.com exclusive and will roll out at Sephora next month, is $35 cheaper than buying two 30mL bottles, for those who don't want to sit around doing the math.) And finally, the brand also upgraded its previously plastic packaging to a bottle made from 100% recycled aluminum. (The pump top is still made from plastic, but it's a notable move toward more sustainable packaging.)

"So often we see beauty brands increase their prices as they get bigger, and it’s always been confusing to me: You’ve increased your economies of scale… why are you raising the cost?" Dieux Co-Founder & Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Palermino tells Fashionista. "While inflation and some ingredients and materials can skyrocket in price — which sometimes explains a price hike — it’s also because, sometimes, as a product gets more popular, a 'business opportunity' is seen."

Dieux has always touted price transparency, often making production cost breakdowns accessible to consumers. So this move is very much in keeping with its ethos. "It's fascinating and fun to go through the process of making a product from scratch and then scaling it. Being educated allows for more informed decision making, and we want to empower our community," explains Palermino. "Not every price is for everyone, and we wanted an explanation for why our serums aren’t $20 or $300. We use high-quality actives, do a lot of work to stabilize our formulas and Joyce [de Lemos, co-founder and formulator] does incredible work in making sure those ingredients actually do what they are supposed to with your skin."

But why drop the price of its most popular product — and moreover, how, exactly, can Dieux afford to do so? "We are still going to be profitable by selling Deliverance," assures Palermino. "It felt like the right thing to do to readjust the price. Our community and the popularity of the product is what got us here, and if we win, our community should win, too."

It's also a strategy for continued growth: "Lowering the price hopefully makes more people open to trying [it]," she says. "We know the power of Deliverance and we want to get it into more people’s routines."

The lightweight antioxidant- and peptide-rich serum also includes other gold standard ingredients (niacinamide, glycerin, shea butter) as well as less conventional ones (cannabidiol and purple passionflower, for example). In addition to soothing skin and calming redness — Palermino credits it for enabling her skin to tolerate retinoids — it also helps with dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, firmness and tone. It can be used by any skin type, is vegan, cruelty-free and a true crowd pleaser.

When asked about the possibility of future price drops, Palermino is enthusiastic. "Yes! We are going to keep evaluating our pricing," she says. "We don’t have anything on the horizon but will continue to do yearly audits."

So, should other beauty brands be dropping their prices as well? The founder acknowledges that each business is unique: "Some brands have been battered by tariffs; others are currently collecting refund checks after raising prices. The more of an indie brand you are, and the smaller you are, the more you’ve been hurt. For us it’s our voice and on-brand to try to teach about how economics, manufacturing and business works, it’s not for everyone," she says.

Ultimately, Palermino is hopeful that Dieux's customer base will feel more connected to the brand as a result of the price drop: "Hopefully our current devotees will see how much we appreciate them and we’ll sell Deliverance to an even wider audience. It’s been a rough year for most Americans, we’re hoping people see there are businesses that are trying to do right by them."

It's a rather...unique pairing, given that Everlane is a "sustainable" fashion darling with its transparent path to achieve net-zero emissions and its commitment to responsibly-sourced materials, and Shein is, well, Shein. The fast fashion e-commerce company has faced its fair share of controversies, including allegations of unethical labor practices, hazardous chemicals in its clothing and copyright infringement. Perhaps Shein is now seeking a reputational facelift by aligning itself with Everlane's "radical transparency."

Founded by Michael Preysman, Everlane launched in 2010 as a direct-to-consumer label offering minimalist basics to sustainably-minded shoppers. In its early days, Everlane stood apart in the industry by offering consumers a behind-the-scenes look into its production by explaining how and where each of its products were made.

L Catterton took a minority stake in the company in 2020 and later became its majority owner in 2024. However, the brand has stalled in recent years. L Catterton and Everlane CEO Alfred Chang had been searching for an investor to clear about $90 million in debt, Puck reported, but the private equity firm was also open to offloading the label.

Both Everlane and Shein declined to comment.

Update, Friday, May 22 10:52 a.m.: Both Shein and Everlane have confirmed that the ultra-fast fashion brand will buy the majority stake in Everlane from L Catterton for an undisclosed amount, Vogue Business reported on Friday. In a message to staff, Everlane CEO Alfred Chang addressed the change in ownership: "This past week has been a hard one," he wrote. "Seeing our company in the media, and in that light, was painful. Needing to stay silent per standard process in these matters has been even harder. I want you to know I've felt the weight of that alongside you. I want to be clear: Everlane remains Everlane. I will continue as CEO, our leadership team will stay in place, and we'll continue operating independently, with our design standards, brand philosophy and values intact.. Moving forward, Everlane will unlock key opportunities by increasing our competitive advantage and reaching more customers around the world."

Womenswear, menswear and unisex silhouettes debuted on the runway, with many students exploring weaving, embroidery, hand-dyeing and other textile techniques through their creations. Sustainability also played a crucial role in the designs, as the graduating students were required to commit to a minimum of 20% responsibly or sustainably sourced resources within their collections (though many students exceeded this requirement, Fashion Department Chairperson Lisa Z. Morgan said in a statement).

Before the runway began, Korina Emmerich of Emme Studio was awarded Pratt Institute's 2026 Fashion Visionary Award. "I was so impressed by how much every student at Pratt held their collection so close to their heart," Emmerich said. "It wasn't about something that was easy to reproduce. It was about making something that meant something."

Pratt's Fashion Department also honored graduating student Caleb Callahan with the 2026 Christopher Hunte "On Point" Award for his "Cork, Kerala" collection, which sartorially explored Irish and Indian anti-colonial histories.

Those wide-ranging sources of inspiration are at the center of Brooklyn Museum’s newest fashion exhibit, “Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses.”

“What I found amazing about Iris was that she had a very different source of inspiration than most designers,” Matthew Yokobosky, senior curator of fashion and material culture at the Brooklyn Museum (who has staged exhibitions on Dior, Virgil Abloh and Thierry Mugler), tells Fashionista. “Of course, we have designers who are influenced by orchids or flowers… but Iris is looking at it beyond just a flower, just a leaf. She's looking at structures. She's looking at growth systems. She's looking at how the world's weather is changing, the ocean, the sky. It's a much more complex box of inspiration.”

Having originated at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2023, the “mid-career retrospective” brings together more than 140 haute couture creations alongside contemporary art pieces, design objects, scientific artifacts and natural history specimens. The show is not chronological. Instead, it offers an immersive look into van Herpen’s mind over the last 19 years. “The exhibition feels like a diary,” van Herpen tells Fashionista. “Shows that have been done, and processes, and collaborations.”

The exhibit is organized into 11 thematic sections that mirror the breadth of van Herpen’s inspirations and commitment to environmental preservation. “Sensory Sea Life” dives beneath the ocean’s surface with otherworldly looks inspired by marine organisms, while “Cosmic Bloom” (above) looks outward to space and the multiverse beyond with dresses that are displayed sideways and upside down. A 2016 glass-sphere dress, set in the “Water and Dreams” space (below), opens the show and brings to mind the sculptural mini Eileen Gu wore to the 2026 Met Gala, alongside liquid-like sculptural gowns and air-like fabrics that evoke waves, waterfalls and drops. On the other end, “New Nature” concludes the exhibit by imagining a post-human world with the possibility of rebirth and transformation, with garments including a look that Beyoncé wore on the Amsterdam stop of her 2023 "Renaissance" tour.

Van Herpen is a master sculptor of silhouettes that appear to defy the laws of physics. That sense of impossibility is inseparable from her passion for experimentation. In 2010, she pioneered the use of 3D printing in haute couture with the “Crystallization” collection, setting the stage for the fusion of technology and craftsmanship that has come to define the brand. In the years since, she's worked with innovative processes including laser cutting, magnetic sculpting and silicone molding and made progress in sustainable material development (her most recent collection featured a fiber made from sugarcane) — all while preserving couture practices. 

“There have always been those experimenters in the history of art and the history of fashion, and I loved that Iris has taken it to another level. She's incorporating new technologies that haven't been addressed before,” Yokobosky says. “[But] Iris is not just technology. She's also those traditional handicrafts, and she's finding the place where they come together. Iris is an artist who's looking at the past and the future and finding a way to bring them together.”

That marriage of technology and technique comes into focus in the “Atelier,” which captures the essence of the brand’s Amsterdam studio, where each collection begins with “hands-on material experimentation.” The room highlights the work of van Herpen’s many collaborators (who are credited throughout the exhibition), like biodesigner Chris Bellamy and architect Philip Beesley, while offering a look at the making of the garments through embroidery samples, laser-cut drawings, 3D-printing materials, and a sketchbook visitors can touch. “You're really going inside my process and my mind here,” says van Herpen. “The spirit of my atelier is embodied in this space.”

For a designer known for creating universes around runway shows, the exhibition similarly builds a distinct atmosphere for every vignette. Videos, lighting, movement and a soundscape — the latter by composer, music producer and van Herpen’s partner, Salvador Breed — help activate the galleries. The sound is especially potent in “Skeletal Embodiment” (above), where a visceral rattling sends a chill through the space as visitors pass garments that mimic human remains and fossils. The eeriness bleeds into “The Mythology of Fear,” which includes the snake-covered dress (below) worn by Björk on tour in 2011.

Van Herpen sees a connection between putting on fashion shows (which get a dedicated video space in the exhibit) and an art retrospective. “I love doing the shows because it carries a certain energy. But what is somewhat frustrating about the show is that we work for months and months on these pieces — sometimes a year! — and then they are gone in like 10 minutes,” she says. “[At an exhibition,] people can come so much closer to the work. You can have your own personal time with a piece. You can be there for an hour if you want, and you can understand the work so much better, and you appreciate the craftsmanship that goes in there, and that is just not possible to embody in a fashion show.” 

Plenty of fashion exhibitions have succeeded at showcasing beautiful garments. What makes “Sculpting the Senses” compelling is the way it places van Herpen’s avant-garde designs in cerebral conversation, not only with contemporary art, but also with artifacts and natural history specimens. Van Herpen’s color-forward gowns (including a red dress seen on Anne Hathaway in "Mother Mary") naturally come alive alongside the pigmented works of collaborator Kim Keever, as well as pieces from artists like Nick Knight and James Turrell; but it is often the less expected pairings that invite the deepest dialogue.

An ornate 19th century maple-and-beech chair sharpens the eye to the details of a wood-like dress from the 2012 collection, inspired by Europe’s Gothic cathedrals (above). Early 20th-century renderings of marine life and brain function from scientists Ernst Haeckel and Santiago Ramón y Cajal, respectively, reveal visual precedents for the patterns and structures echoed in the garments nearby. An 80-million-year-old dinosaur skull brings out the edges and coiled lines of the mollusc-inspired dress from van Herpen’s 2016 collection.

Van Herpen sees these pairings as entirely natural. “Artifacts in the exhibition speak to our origins, who we are, and I think fashion ultimately asks that question: Who are we, and where are we going?” Beyond offering fans a deeper understanding of her artistic process, she hopes the exhibition becomes “a point of interest for people that normally are not into fashion.”

“Everything that I do is very intuitive. My mind combining all of the disciplines into one, that's just natural to me… but not everyone sees the connection,” she continues. “It made me realize how important it is to have these conversations to broaden the perspective on fashion. People tend to narrow it down to a very small isolated bubble, but it is connected to all of these worlds.”

“Sculpting the Senses” refuses to treat couture as an echo chamber. Van Herpen’s work may begin with the spectacle and beauty, but it rarely stops there. It opens the door to exploration — to the ocean floor, to bone structures, to Greek myths, to microscopic organisms, to distant galaxies — and argues that couture can be more than a display of aesthetics or technique. It can be a way of asking how humans fit into the larger world around us.

“Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses” is on view at the Brooklyn Museum from May 16 through Dec. 6, 2026.

Ferragamo Sales Dip 1.2% in Q1 2026

Ferragamo released its Q1 2026 earnings on Thursday, which showed the group's total revenue dropped 1.2% to €209 million ($243 million). Kosas' Multi-Purpose Makeup Drop

"Each collection reflects not only a mastery of craft, but the discipline, courage and distinct point of view that define the next generation of fashion."

Before last week's fashion show commenced, AAU held an honorary doctorate ceremony recognizing the legacy of iconic designer Roy Halston Frowick (known mononymously as Halston). In a partnership between the With Love Halston foundation and the AAU School of Fashion, 10 students unveiled designs inspired by the designer's legacy and his archives, with a focus on his signature floral motifs.

At a separate runway show held in San Francisco's Union Square on May 8, those 10 student designers competed for the With Love Halston scholarship and the foundation selected Master of Fashion Design student Eva Kam as the recipient. Kam's winning design — a black-and-yellow dress with a billowing flower-printed skirt — honored Halston's yellow cocoon dress.

In addition to Kam, the "Us Now" participating student designers also included Brittany Patterson, Patric Yikun Wang, Fiza Riyas, Ella Romano, Justin Federico, Katelyn Knapp and Katherine Van Kraut, among others. While exploring both womenswear and menswear categories, students challenged conventional silhouettes and refined their own design aesthetics. For example, Patterson (a U.S. Air Force veteran) transformed uniform codes into colorful expressions and Wang utilized horsehair to reveal traditionally unseen fabrics.

Maybe that’s why the film has endured. All of us in fashion and adjacent worlds know David Frankel’s 2006 film all too well — the cutting one-liners, the cerulean monologue and its distinctly noughties sense of glamour defined by a world still lived fully in the moment. It captured an industry on the cusp of immense change, when print journalism still held cultural authority. Now, the internet has completely transformed that world, and it’s on this stage where the sequel enters the fray. It has already generated millions in buzz alongside surpassing the original film’s box office total — garnering over $433 million globally within its first 10 days, including roughly $76.7 million domestically on opening weekend according to box office stats.

The sequel sees Andy Sachs drawn back into the orbit of Miranda Priestly years after leaving Runway, as the magazine attempts to survive a collapsing print ecosystem and a fast-fashion scandal triggered by the publication of a feature on a Shein-like conglomerate that Miranda had overlooked.

At the same time, Andy and her team at a more “serious” publication are abruptly laid off — an early sequence that immediately situates the story within the precarity of today’s media industry. From there, Andy’s return to Miranda’s world unsettles old power dynamics as she is pulled back into efforts to stabilize and save the institution she once escaped.

Running alongside this is a billionaire storyline, as tech-backed patrons enter the orbit of fashion media, endeavoring to reframe editorial influence with private capital as the main driver. Ring any bells?

It’s in this framework that the film both nods to and arrives within an even more tumultuous moment for journalism, media and the fashion industry at large, as it faces shrinking budgets and strain across all sectors — where instability is no longer confined to the newsroom, but felt across the entire production and consumption chain of fashion. This raises the question of whether this is, in fact, the right moment for the film’s release.

For fashion writer and consultant (and former The Zoe Report editor) Aemilia Madden, it is. The film’s relevance extends beyond an industry still navigating an identity crisis, and speaks just as clearly to the structural gaps within the film industry itself, which is facing a parallel set of pressures and recalibrations. “To have a movie that passes the Bechdel test, that’s aimed directly at women, and doesn’t center relationships is what we need more of; and what studios don’t always take risks on today,” she says. 

Amy Odell, a veteran fashion journalist, author of the bestselling “Anna: The Biography,” as well as the voice behind the Back Row podcast and newsletter, also underscores the film’s value as a cultural document — one that captures not only surface-level shifts within the industry, but the slower structural erosion beneath them. It is, she suggests, a deliberately sobering reflection of a sobering era.

“I think the commentary on the media industry is really on point,” she notes. “The first film presented a fantasy of the world, and this one presents more of the grim reality…Condé Nast has been cut down to size — it’s almost like a clipping company now.”

That grim reality is hardly an exaggeration. In just the last six years, major media companies including Condé Nast, Vice Media and Vox Media have collectively undergone thousands of layoffs, with Glamour among the most affected in Condé's latest rounds, which eliminated much of the title's editorial and support staff. 

While the fashion world has transformed in many ways over the past two decades, Odell, who has reported extensively on its internal structures, is direct about what has not changed: “There are still a lot of toxic assistant jobs,” she says. “A lot of people still aren’t getting paid.” Even as the industry has become paradoxically more corporate and ostensibly more democratized, its internal hierarchies remain largely intact.

For Madden, who now authors the newsletter Taeste Bud, there is a lot to reconcile in navigating an industry that is on increasingly fragile footing. “Right now, things can feel quite bleak — AI is replacing our jobs, expenses are rising, politics are toxic,” she says. Perhaps that’s why we keep returning to these stories, especially when it juggles our harrowing reality with a healthy dose of satirized whimsy. “I think there’s something comforting about looking back and viewing the past as simpler times, even if that’s not how it felt living it.”

Nostalgia is a driver of many sequels, but "The Devil Wears Prada 2" feels especially resonant given how the first film captured the golden age of magazines. Social media strategist and fashion creator Jay Choyce-Tibbitts zooms out to the system that reshaped everything around it — the internet. “Before that transformative period, culture was filtered through a relatively small number of gatekeepers. Condé Nast and Vogue were really the documenters, filters and distributors of culture," he says. "But today basically every single person is their own publisher.”

In that shift, legacy media has been forced into competition with the very audiences it once shaped. Choyce-Tibbitts points to one of the film’s quieter lines as unexpectedly precise: Stanley Tucci’s character Nigel Kipling, the unwavering art director of Runway, makes a lighthearted yet pointed remark about the ’90s, when magazines operated with seemingly infinite budgets and could “spend three months in Africa” for a photo shoot. This isn’t an exaggeration: In their heyday, annual magazine budgets often ran into the multimillions, funding international shoots, large creative teams and time to cultivate their work into something beautiful and memorable. That pace is now incompatible with a digital-first landscape.

Now, magazines produce content that, according to Nigel, “people watch while they pee.” These fundamental changes in the way that magazines operate have left their most dedicated audiences increasingly niche. “The magazine now has to be a place for the enthusiast,” explains Choyce-Tibbitts. “If they are not deeply invested, they can get that information online. It’s changed from a macro perspective.” (Therein lies the clipping farm.)

Choyce-Tibbitts also reads the sequel as unusually accurate in how it captures the economics of contemporary media. “The power play between the magazine and brands, the ‘no us, no you’ moment between Emily and Miranda, is so real,” he says. What emerges is a system where even cultural institutions function as revenue engines first and storytellers second.

Emmy-nominated journalist (and Rolling Stone’s former Senior Multimedia Editor) Kyle Lamar Rice, who now writes the menswear-culture hybrid Substack The Cultured Swine, wasn’t as swayed by the film's charms.

“I went into the movie with low expectations because I love the original and sequels rarely land in the same way,” he says. For Rice, the issue is not whether the sequel succeeds on the surface, but what it chooses not to confront: The instability of media exists in the background, but never fully enters the frame as Andy Sachs gallivants throughout New York City contending with a new guard of fashionistas and singlehandedly restoring Miranda Priestly’s reputation. While the film acknowledges the Jeff Bezos-sized elephant in the room, it may not fully account for those in the industry left picking up the pieces. “Media is probably in one of the toughest spots it’s ever been in its entire lifespan,” Rice says. “We are at an inflection point — it’s do or die.”

Like Rice, many established writers have left their magazine posts (by way of choice or necessity) and launched their own platforms — be it a Substack or independent title — as editorial roles contracted and independent publishing became both a creative outlet and an economic necessity for survival. But even in all these evolutions, one thing remains the same: an unrelenting dedication to the craft.

Something the film captures across both installments — and that remains an enduring truth of this industry — is that, underneath all its instability and toxicity, is a love for the game that can’t be entirely shaken. Miranda’s now-famous line from the first film — “Don’t be ridiculous, Andy, everybody wants this,” delivered in the car during Paris Fashion Week, remains fairly relevant. While we know the gloss is a façade and the industry is ultimately sustained by hard work and exhaustion in equal measure, there remains an almost intrinsic pull toward it.

“When we were kids, media was pure magic,” recalls Rice. “I think to an extent, a lot of us still have that fight in us. But we also have a better sense of what’s realistic now.”

This might be a little bit niche, but I've really been into the fragrance Printemps Blanc by Maison Mataha. I got that bottle in February and I'm probably going to need a new one. It smells so incredibly sweet. If you love sweet fragrances, I have been loving it for this season.

I bought two bottles of the Danessa Myricks Water Powder Serum. It was sold out at Sephora during the Sephora sale. I was trying to wait for it to come back in stock, but it hasn't, so I was like, 'I need that now.' It is the perfect mattifying, smoothing primer, especially if you have acne-prone or oily skin.

What's a fashion staple you love so much you've bought multiples?

I always have a pair of Converse. I might wash them, but once I've worn them down, I will definitely get a pair of fresh white Converse.

What's a summer beauty must-have?

Sunscreen — specifically body spray sunscreen, because it'll give you that glow. I really like the one Sol de Janiero has.

In a statement, Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, called Jacobs “a designer of rare creativity and unique vision,” while Jacobs thanked Arnault and the LVMH group: "I am forever grateful to Bernard Arnault for his support, belief and trust in me over the last 30 years. It has been an honor and privilege to work alongside the Arnault Family and LVMH," he wrote on Instagram.

As for Jacobs, he's not going anywhere. The designer will remain in his role as founder and creative director following the transaction, continuing to oversee the brand’s runway collections. "As I continue on my journey as Creative Director, I want to express my indebtedness to all of the passionate, hardworking, devoted, creative and talented teams of people at Marc Jacobs International," he continued.

For WHP Global, the acquisition represents one of its largest fashion deals to date. According to the New York-based company, the addition of Marc Jacobs will push its portfolio to more than $9.5 billion in global retail sales. Meanwhile, G-III’s involvement underscores the company’s goals beyond licensed apparel. It's best known for a portfolio of owned and licensed brands, including DKNY, Donna Karan and Karl Lagerfeld.

The move comes at an interesting moment for the brand itself. Marc Jacobs has recently seen a boost in cultural relevance, particularly among younger consumers, through buzzy runway shows, the ongoing Y2K resurgence and its sub-label Heaven by Marc Jacobs. The designer is also set to revive his beloved makeup line, Marc Jacobs Beauty, after Kendo Brands (under the LVMH umbrella) discontinued it in 2021. The brand will return under a long-term licensing agreement with Coty Inc.

Louis Vuitton to Show Cruise 2027 at The Frick

Louis Vuitton will present its Cruise 2027 collection at The Frick Collection in New York City on May 20. Jonathan Anderson showed his Cruise 2027 collection for Dior in Los Angles on Wednesday, a collection that "explores the House’s longstanding relationship with Hollywood," per show notes. Cali became the heart of Peixoto's business and home to its production factory. There, Peixoto has created an environment of skilled workers who are encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise. The Los Angeles-based makeup artist — whose celebrity client list boasts stars like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hailey Bieber and Phoebe Dynevor — first ventured into beauty entrepreneurship in 2018 with eye-shadow brand Róen Beauty. She stepped away from the label in 2020, but soon returned to the brand-building game in 2023 with Ciele Cosmetics, an SPF-infused, "acne-safe" color cosmetics line.

"I feel like I have my PhD in beauty because I've worn so many hats," DeRoest tells Fashionista. "And I think that all of that has definitely influenced the way that I created Ciele."

Though DeRoest now works with sculpted canvases (read: celebrity visages), she credits encounters with real beauty consumers in her early retail career as a key influence while developing Ciele's problem-solving products. Her inspiration for the brand initially came from her own skin concerns: DeRoest dealt with acne flare-ups and sun damage in her early to mid-30s and had a thought: "'Why can't I layer on more sunscreen through my blush? Because this is the area that has all of my problems.'" A light bulb went off, and Ciele was born. But finding a chemist that would help bridge the gap between sunscreen and color cosmetics was an uphill battle.

"A lot of chemists are comfortable making a tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 or 30," DeRoest expands. "But working through high-performance color cosmetics that you're using on a red carpet that have pigment is a new kind of challenge. I found early on that it's limited to who will play ball with you for that."

As a self-described "hands-on formulator founder," DeRoest eventually found a chemist who would combine mineral sunscreen filters with makeup, resulting in Ciele's hero Blush & Protect SPF 50+ ($34). Ciele has since expanded its "sun-smart" assortment to include a tinted serum, concealer, liquid highlighter, primer, liquid bronzer, loose finishing powder and powder blush — all of which are formulated with mineral SPF 30+ to SPF 50+ (and without pore-clogging ingredients).

It's important to keep in mind that adding SPF to makeup isn't a sun-care loophole, but rather an addition to a minimum base layer of SPF 30. But let's face it: "No one is putting on enough sunscreen," DeRoest says. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that adults apply one teaspoon of SPF to their face, which is roughly the amount needed to cover the length of your index and middle fingers. However, only about 13.5% of Americans wear sunscreen daily, according to a 2023 national survey.

"I'm still using sunscreen, but if I'm able to create formulas in makeup that are layering on top of that... people are getting more out of their makeup," says DeRoest.

Out of Ciele's SPF-spiked offerings, DeRoest names its pressed powder blush, Flush & Protect SPF 45+ ($34), as the brand's "most challenging formula" since "that was a new innovation that hadn't come about," she explains. To get the formula measurements right, she turned to Korean labs that were "willing to go there with the innovation and the technology." Ciele will also be expanding into a new product category this fall with a launch that has been two years in the making. "It's a real labor of love, but I think that that is also what really excites me about what I'm doing is that I really do feel like I'm solving a problem," DeRoest says.

After exclusively launching in 270 Sephora doors in 2023, Ciele is now available in every Sephora store nationwide. When it comes to sustainable brand growth, DeRoest's philosophy is "slow and steady wins the race." While intentionally scaling the brand, she's also eyeing potential global expansion to Europe, Australia, Asia and India. "There's so many markets out there, but I want to do it in a way that's really thoughtful and not getting too big for our britches," she continues.

As Ciele celebrates its third anniversary this year, DeRoest teases that its next chapter may segue into "more artistry" as the brand prepares to "showcase some new ideas and innovation beyond just singularly SPF." As it expands, Ciele doesn't plan on adding SPF to formulas where it doesn't make sense, such mascara. Above all else, DeRoest is laser focused on positioning Ciele as an "evergreen brand."

"It's not a trend brand," she continues. "It's not something that's just a flash in the pan so that I can sell it and make a lot of money. This is just really about creating something that we'll look back in 20 years and still see it in major retailers."
